Ok, so I've been tempted by Isaku's divine asscher, and couldn't help myself.

What do you think?

ETA: I haven't bought it yet!

*heh* No I haven't

It'll be worn as an e-ring, because I have come to realize that I don't really like wearing rings on my right hand.

I haven't purchased it yet - I was hoping to get some opinions on this stone.

It doesn't quite speak to me as Isaku's gorgeous stone did though, and the windmills looks a bit thinner... hmmm..

Do you love drop style asschers?

Windmills are too small and its a little too dark in the center for me.
There fine in the smaller sizes but I dont care for them in the larger sizes.

If you love drop style asschers even in large sizes then yea thats a good one of that type.

Thanks strm!

Yes I prefer asschers like Isaku's - that's a 'multi-step' one right?

Once a year I get bitten by the asscher bug - I think I need to get my act together and pay a visit to Jon and have a look at potential stones in person. Plus the tax I have to pay for the rock can pay for a business class flight there from Melbourne

All 3 styles can be the same depth and have the same number of facets the difference is in the angle relationships of the facets.

Strm knows best here but definitely - the windmills are kinda small for this stone IMO.

Ok I'll keep looking.

Sorry Jon!!

So strm, what should I be telling Jon/Tim I am looking for with regards to my preference for asschers that are more like Isaku's? Are there any specifics u need to look out for? I just feel bad having them call in stones on their tab for me, and I'll like to be able to narrow it down a little.

I know - close to impossible when it comes to asschers

I didn't like this one as much as isakus for sure...

Gosh I love asschers and their beautiful patterns but that SPREAD ... 7.6mm? That's the size of my old 1.60c rb stone. For probably twice as much. Every time I think I adore asschers I think about the spread loss. You have to halo the thing to get some really mm'age out of it!!! It's a good thing they look fabulous halo'd.

JL in the other thread you asked about the setting you are talking to Garry about...I am not that particular about my ring settings ( as long as it looks good! ) so I am no help with being picky and going on faith that they can create what you want, but it does sound a little odd that you'd have to pay for a remake of the setting if something goes wrong on their end, esp if you can't see a wax etc?

Hi mara!

Yeah ana mentioned (in one of my old threads)once that sure, the setting looks good, but another few thousand towards the stone will also be good and I think I need to keep that in mind. The prices quoted so far for the setting I like are significant enough to be able to add some weight to the stone, to inch it closer to the 3ct mark

Do you think a 3ct asscher will look good in that divine cartier setting?

ETA: and yes I can be picky with my rings (and I appreciate that he knows that), and I know garry will fix it if I don't end up liking it because he fixed my eternity ring for me FOC, but I wondered about having to pay more for the end product if something goes wrong

i LOVE that cartier asscher but i don't know how a smaller stone would look in it. that 5.5c just looks stunning, but i don't know that we have seen any attempts at using a 3c or similar in there? i'm sure it would be lovely but i don't know that it would have quite the same OOMPH as the 5.5c of course, which is why i think a halo on an asscher can be a great addition for spread. the setting that isaku is considering is amazing...maybe a slightly more simple version of that?

Mara, I have to agree with you on this one. The gorgeous Cartier repro setting with the 5.55c asscher just blows me away, and I'm not sure an asscher under 4c min. would have the same effect.

Gosh I love asschers and their beautiful patterns but that SPREAD

Two factors to consider here:

Emerald cuts cost significantly less per carat than RBs. More weight for less money. It's not enough to make up for the difference, but it helps.

It's not quite fair to compare length/width of a square cut stone and a round. This is even more apparent with princess cuts, where a 7mm square stone's face-up area is 49 sq mm, but a 7mm RB's face-up area is 38 sq mm. The EC's clipped corners reduce this difference but I think it's still a factor.

I'd like to see comments from someone like Strm though who is probably more familiar with area e.g. from Diamcalc, and more specific pricing differences.

I dont really buy into the area deal.
I think asschers have a precence that makes them look bigger where a princess dont.

asscher 6.59mm 1.69ct @ $13,878.46 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/1666/
princess 6.45 1.71ct @ $14,865.00 http://dscaasi.com/diamonds/diamondDetail.asp?stockNum=11-0306

Thats as close as I could find to matching size color clarity pol/sym.
Those 2 diamonds could be cut from the same rough(princess and asscher), so you see why asschers are cut deep?
Iv shown that they can be cut as shallow as 50% and still rock but if the cutter can cut a 70% deep princess out of the same rough its not going to happen.

ACA round 6.9mm 1.21ct @ $11180 http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-2408719.htm

i definitely believe that their presence is strong ... maybe strong enough to overcome the mm spread loss ... but as a RB lover i'm used to looking for spread! also in terms of asschers being cheaper than RB counterparts, i haven't necessarily seen that on the larger ones, maybe i am missing it. oh also i tend to compare spread to spread not carat. so maybe that is why i don't think asschers are cheaper than RB's. that 2.47c asscher that jade put up is probably way more than a comparable 1.6c round.

I wasn't being clear enough Strm, let me try a different way (wasn't comparing EC with princess). With a square cut, length width and depth don't describe face-up size the same way they do for a round, since across the diagonal there is much more length for the square cut. Face-up area is simply one way to illustrate this. My point is that the report measurements you use to evaluate spread for a round can't be used apples-to-apples to compare spread against a square cut.

Mara...When I first joined PS, and was reading through posts, I saw your avatar: a gorgeous asscher! Since then, you've upgraded your e-ring to a beautiful RB, but I think you still love asschers and probably will have one sooner rather than later. In fact, looking back at old asscher threads, I saw that you were looking for the ideal asscher, and that orange_horse's fiancee's 4c came pretty darn close to perfection (if there is such a stone as an ideal asscher).

While the RB's are sparkly and gorgeous, I think there's going to be an asscher in Mara's future. RHR??? Once you get " asscher lust", it's there waiting to be satisfied.

See what your avatar did to me ????

haha isaku that actually was NOT my asscher in my old avatar!!

jade leaves was soo sweet (and evil too cuz she gave me ideas) to photoshop a big honking asscher onto my existing e-ring on one of my pictures...i loved it so much i had to make it my avatar.

i got so many PM's about that ring it was hilarious...everyone thought it was mine (i wish) and you are probably right, i think my asscher lust needs to be satisfied...i hope to take a page from Jade's book and negotiate something sparkly for the first child...though i doubt it will be a 3c asscher! a girl can dream!

Hi JL...Even though I've just bought an asscher doesn't mean I'm an expert, but this one doesn't speak to me either.

If you can go to 3c and would like to use the asscher as an e-ring (as you mentioned), I have a favourite on file. Tell me what you think of this....This would by my next upgade, no question. Sorry, I don't know the designer, but I'm pretty sure anyone could copy it - it's pretty generic.

Oops, tried to post it, but the file's too big. I'll try re-sizing it.

Had trouble re-sizing. Can't Photoshop yet; add that to the long list of things I need to learn

What do you think???
