Hello all, thank you in advance for any help you may provide. I have been shopping for a loose (round) diamond that I will have wset in an engagement ring I've already purchased at a local jeweler. Just when I thought I had a clue what I was doing, I've found myself second guessing types of certs, cuts, colors, etc...I'm looking for a diamond around 1.5 carats, and really I want the most bang for the buck. My fiance to be isn't too caught up in bragging about the color, clarity, and so on. But I do want something that is clean to the eye, and really looks nice. I'm not sure if I should copy/paste links to diamonds I have been considering, or if someone can provide the cut, color, and clarity I'm probably looking for. I've seen several GIA Premium cut, I, VS2 within my price range. Will I be be happy with that? Don't even start with table, polish, symmetry, and depth. AHHHH, I need some direction. Thanks again. John John |

As far as color and clarity goes, yes I think you'd be very happy with it. Can you find out the Crown angle, Pavilion angle, depth%, and table %? That will help to know if it's a sparkler!

clarity, color, carat weight, and cut are not things that we can help you with, because that's sort of a personal decision. You've seen I VS2 and think that looks good, and that's a pretty good place to be, although I think you could still expand to SI1. We know you're looking for 1.5 and the cut depends on how much your budget is.

Here is an example of a diamond I thought looked good for my needs. http://www.abazias.com/database/NewDiamondInfo.asp?stock=29935042 Should I consider dropping to an SI1 and look for a better cut? John |

The more expensive diamond is a far superior cut. It is a hearts and arrows, ideal cut with excellent polish symmetry and light performance. It's not even in the same class as the abazias stone. Here's another one if you want a higher color than J: http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/2129/

"Ideal" always has to be determined by someone. To a vendor, a stone might be ideal, but that stone to the client is not ideal. Anyway, the Abazias stone, I don't see a grading report so I tell you if I think it might be ideal.

carat weight, yes. You should still be able to get something >1.25 cts, and the loss of visual impact isn't that great.

Well if the vendor says the diamond is a GIA ideal, it will say just that on the grading report correct? And what will the 1.25 have other than cut that is superior to the 1.5 I showed as an example?

ridiculous...GIA does not give an "Ideal" cut grade ETA: Sorry if that sounded harsh; if the vendor said that, that's what I'd be peeved about.

Hang on a minute and let me find the measurements I posted for someone else today. (GIA's highest cut is Excellent, but some stones would also fall into the AGS Ideal standards. I know some vendors use the classification Ideal when the cut is actually certified by GIA as Excellent). Table: 53-58% (but like Mara, I'd aim for about 55-56) Girdle: thin, medium, slightly thick Culet: none, pointed, small Polish: Ideal/Excellent Symmetry: Ideal/Excellent Crown Angle: 34-35 Pavilion Angle 40.6-40.9

You are welcome, John! I was lost until I had something to go by. So I am happy to share it! (posted within last post) One more thing. The highest AGS grade for cut is Ideal and the highest GIA is Excellent. I'm not sure if the word premium is still being used, but it would be below excellent.

I think you'll feel a lot more comfortable if you learn more about the cut of diamonds. My favorite place for info is GoodOldGold. They have tons of info and John explains it all very well! Perhaps you want to start HERE and be sure to read about ideal cut diamonds

No, not really unless you are prepared to go to a low color and clarity. You're better off staying just under 1.5 because there is a big price jump at 1.5 cts. I happen to be also looking at this size range, and I am seeing around $10,000 for 1.4+ range H VS2, which I consider to be decent, mid-range quality. So you need to go to I or J for color and SI for clarity if you want to go to $7500 in price. A nice one carat in ideal cut can easily cost $7500.

We need to know the crown and pavilion angles. They should be able to tell you. Get them to show you how it looks through the idealscope, too. Post a picture of the ideal scope view.

Date: 6/1/2006 12:44:39 PM Author: JohnMD Please!!! I'm suposed to go see this stone in an hour, I need advise/opinions. http://www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com/diamond_detail.cfm?did=7958956 John, I'm fond of larger tabled diamonds as my pet rock is similarly proportioned. What was written about this stone being less than Ideal is correct, but it's also probably that this stone is absolutely beautiful. In my stone's case, I would put it up against any Ideal cut stone and it's quite beautiful. For example, when I walk through Tiffany's my stone performs as well if not better than Tiffany's most beautiful diamonds. Yet my stone is graded GIA Very Good, not Excellent. Anyway, just wanted to chime in that a stone of these proportions can be quite beautiful. This is a big purchase, so hopefully you can see it in person, or if that's not possible, have it sent to an appraiser who can evaluate it in person to provide you the comfort level you are seeking. Best of luck........... "Got Diamond? |
