EDITED TO ADD PICS!
Ok ladies. I have been dress shopping this weekend! I am SOOO excited. We are getting married this fall in the mountains and I originally thought I wanted a very simple, a la JCrew wedding dress. When I tried these styles on, though they looked ok, but more suitable for a beachy wedding. (A little too hangy and nightgowny for our fall mountain wedding.)

So, I tried on a bunch, and this was the style that looked the best! Even though I didn't think I would EVER want a ballgown. Is this too much for a fall outdoor wedding? I would not wear the train down, I would either have it bustled up, or shortened.

http://watters.com/product.php?coll=brides&showid=280

Even my mom, who said "why are you trying THAT on" when I took it off the rack, said it was stunning when I tried it on.

I did not see this dress in the store, but I thought it might be a good alternative to the formality of the dress with the train. I am worried, however that the ribbon sash might fall in a funny place (not my waist) and "cut me in half."
http://watters.com/product.php?coll=brides&showid=359

What do you think? Would this dress be too much in ivory for fall in the mountains? I am having trouble downloading the pics we took of me in the dress, but I can send them when I have them.

I love the style of the first one, but agree that the train mght be a bit cumbersome outside.  I'm totally in love with the "pick-up" style of skirt.  The second one is lovely as well, but definitely try it on.  I found that the dresses with a higher sash tended to make my torso look shorter, which could be a good or bad thing depending on your body type.  I love the addition of color, though, with the sash.

A fall mountain wedding sounds soooo wonderful!!  Congrats!

Here's some pictures of the first dress I tried and loved - let me know what you think! I know the clips, etc. are not so attractive - we had to hold it in place to see what it might really look like, the store sample was too small.

I think this might be the one, but I'm worried that it's 'too much dress' for an informal mountain wedding...

view of the back - the train would be bustled up somewhat like this (but nicer!)

Ooooh, I absolutely love it!!!! I don't think it'll be too much for a mountain fall wedding at all! It's your WEDDING, you get to wear a fancy dress if you want to!!! I think with a gorgeous bustled train, it would be perfect! I also agree that I would be a little wary of the sash one until you can try it on and see how that works. I think generally that type of sash is unflattering on most body types, so definitely check it out before going for it. But if you don't like how that one fits/can't find it, then BUY THE FIRST ONE!!!! I loooove it and think it would look perfect in the mountains in fall!!!!

(What mountains by the way? Just curious!)

Thanks, albicocca! I was scared that I liked it in the store, but that when I got home it would make me look like a frosted hippo! (I never thought I'd want a ballgown!) I'm hoping it doesn't make me look large... I'm normally a size 8, but that was not even closing around my ribs in that dress. I am going to go look at the one with the sash tomorrow, but it will have to be pretty good to beat the first one in my mind!

Oooh, Colorado mountains, that sounds gorgeous! Hehe and you don't look remotely like a frosted hippo!!!

But I can totally identify with your feeling of your dress being too much; I ended up with a much fancier looking dress than I was envisioning for my outdoor wedding at my family's summer home in the Adirondacks. But I love it and it's my wedding, and I get to wear whatever I want, right?? So don't feel bad about it being too poofy!!! It's gorgeous and seems entirely appropriate to me!!

I tried on the first one, too.  It actually looks good with a sash as well.  The stores often have extra ones and can just tie one around you, if you want a little color.  This would probably be a good option if you can't find the 2nd one to try, so you can get a feeling of what you like.  I really liked the sash because it seemed to narrow my waist a bit (pinched the dress in) to give me more of an hourglass shape.  They showed me two types of sashes.  The first was a narrow ribbon sash tied like this (http://www.watters.com/product.php?coll=brides&showid=435) and the second was a thicker belt sort of like this (http://www.davidsbridal.com/bridal_gowns_detail.jsp?stid=2027&prodgroup=10).

I love the dress and it's definately not too much for a mountain wedding!  Very pretty! :)

Thanks! That is really helpful to see the dress with a sash! I am so excited about the style of the dress, even though I thought I wanted something very simple without a train or detailing! I will keep you posted on the other trainless style!

The gown is lovely!  It's not too much at all, it's not too poofy but it's very bridal... I love it!  And I think it would be perfect with or w/o the sash, your choice.

I love the dress, love the pickups, love the way it's bustled in the back.  I'm partial to the pickup style, I absolutely adore it!  Who was the girl who married Kevin Costner?  Well, she had a way bigger dress than this and if I'm not mistaken they got married in the Colorado mtns too.  So there, you can do it!

I love the first dress, the 5053 I think it is.  I tried it on and LOVED it, I was going to get it with a red sash.  I decided against it and went for the watters BM 5299 because it was less to carry around and i am getting married in Vegas in August.  Saying that, the dress is gorgeous and I definately dont think it would be too much for you. And honesty, I never felt quite so bridey as I did when I tried on that dress!!!

Ok, I finally tried on the other dress! The store was kind of scary, and the dresses on its rack were in horrible shape. But at least you get some idea of how the 6085 style looks. Some of the pickups in the sample had fallen or ripped out (awful!) but you can see that the sillhouette is slimmer and less poofy than the 5053. Not sure if I like it better or not - at first I thought I did, but then I realized that the satin makes it look a little droopy, and not as light as the 5053 (the first one I tried.)

Help! I need advice!

Another option - instead of going for the satin version, I could get the 5053 and add a sash to lighten it up!

Have you checked bridesmaid dresses from Watters? My friend is getting married in essentially the same dress, with the pick-ups, but its a bridesmaid dress, in white, so it was lots cheaper, and doesnt have the train, so it might be a little simpler, like you're looking for.

I think this is the one she got, style 6270.

I'd choose the satin because it just looks better (and it'll probably photograph better!). If you want fullness, you can always add a crinoline. Just my opinion, though, they're both very pretty!

Let me put it this way....
I REALLY DO NOT like pick-up dresses (I actually think I ran screaming from the ones one store kept trying to put me in!) and I LOVE the first dress. I think it falls so beautifully. I think the pick-ups look almost rustic, like you were walking through the mountains to your ceremony and gathered your dress for ease of movement.

I don't like #2 as well, but I might have a different opinion if the sample were in better condition. #1 just looked more, I don't know, bride ready?

The bridesmaid dress looks very similar, and could cut the budget!

Either way, you will be beautiful!

Thanks for the advice - I'm kind of torn. I thought the second dress would be sleeker and I would like it better, but I think the style looks a little tired - that could be the heavier fabric, or it could be that the sample was in bad shape. Seriously - this bridal shop looked like it had been through a flood or some other natural disaster.

The second dress looks a little better in the pics too because it was close to my size, while the first dress sample was a couple sizes too small....
