Is there a way to determine if a diamond has been re-certed? Is there a trail leading back to the "cut" date of the diamond? Does a cert have the actual "cut" date on it or just the cert date?

I was curious if there is a way to determine if a diamond was just cut or if it was cut a few years back and re-certed to a current date and if a re-certed diamond holds any less "value" than one that was cut recently.

When you're submitting a diamond for certification, you don't need to tell
all the story of this diamond at all..... It can be a conflict diamond... you will never know!

GIA and most other labs do not release such information unless Court ordered.

Client information is supposed to be confidential.

Sometimes, the date or locale of the cutting can be recognized by an expert.

Some previously worn diamond show "wear"....

Ask the seller if it is a new diamond or a used one.

Many states have laws governing the accurate disclosure of used items and not saying they are new - when the item was previously sold ( includes sold and returned too).

When you're buying a stone with an old certificate, you should always ask
yourself what happened to that diamond in the time period following
the first certification... Was it sold? Was it in your jeweller's hands... Why was it not
sold before? For peace of mind, maybe you should ask for recertification
or get an independant appraisal... so you'll have 2 independant evaluations
coming from 2 sources. I'll be extremely cautious in buying a stone that was
certified not in the last 12 months.
One last thing. Don't expect to "trace" all the history of the diamond you're planning
to buy unless you have a "cutter" in your family....

Hope this helps.
