in a mall jewelry store yesterday.here's what i heard the salesman said....

the deeper stones has more fire.
nice stones only comes in D-F color.
look for stones with VS1 clarity or higher.the rest are garbage.
all the better cut stones has 60-62% table.

i wanted to drag this couple out of the store and tell them...this guy is feeding you a bunch of B.S.

it is always harder to find a "mind clean" stone than a eye clean stone.

I know - it's so silly - it happened to me the other day as well, my boyfriend had to drag me out of the store before I started throw punches....jeeeze - you would think they would educate their staff in the jewelry stores!

If they educated their staff, they would have to carry the kind of merchandise that supported what they taught.  They are not going to do that.  It's hard to sell poorly cut diamonds if you are telling people the truth about well cut ones!

The real question is what were you doing in a mall jewelry store?

Ugh, I've had some pretty horrid experiences with mall stores while trying to decide what kind of w-ring my fiance wants. One store had a particularly gorgeous 3 ct. radiant with a halo and the saleslady tried to tell me it was an EC. Though, on the plus side, she commented that my .85 ct e-ring was a nice "1 ct stone." I didn't even correct her, especially since mine looked the exact same size as their 1 cts.

By their standards, my I colored, SI1 AGS000, would be crap. So glad I found this place.

Yes what were you doing in a maul jewelry store??  Too bad and you didn't get their attention and tell them about PS!!  The info out there at most of these stores is always a bunch of cr*p.  Such a shame.

PS should create little cards that read something like "don't get ripped-off. visit www.pricescope.com".  They can discreetly be passed to consumers in need!

Bose does this.  I travel quite a bit for biz, and invested in a pair of their AWESOME noise-cancelling headsets. I get asked about them all the time on the plane. Bose included a little stack of info cards to pass on for this purpose.

This is the PERFECT solution, CG!!!!!

How fitting this thread!
Yesterday I was walking through the mall with my fiance and we stopped into a Kay. I wanted to be a brat and make comparisons. First, they had no solitaires above a J-K and those were described as "completely colorless". Most were SI's, which is fine since mine is SI1. All the cuts they called brilliant were so not! I put my hand on the counter over the display of a .62 and said "hey Ian, see the difference?" He says "geez that one looks like a black hoel compared to yours." The salesperson then comes over with the usual fast-talking and asked did I get my ring from them and was a looking to buy more. I smiled and said no, you don't carry high quality stones at your stores. He pulled out the tray and mine blew them all away in brilliance.

Get this- most of them were 2-3 thousand more than mine.

I spent months looking at rings on PS before my boyfriend and I decided to actually go try some on, so I could figure out which ones I liked on my hand. For example, I love step cuts but had never actually seen one in real life. We decided to visit some maul stores while Christmas shopping, and it was awful!

BF: Do you have any asschers?
Saleslady: What are those?
Me: Do you have any emeralds?
Saleslady: Here's one. (Hands me a princess.)
Me: That's a princess, I asked for an emerald.
Saleslady: That is an emerald, those ones are princesses (points at some ECs).
Me: I just want to see a step cut.
Saleslady: What do you mean?
etc etc

The sad thing is that BF felt stupid after talking to her, like he was butchering the terminology (like "asscher"). I tried to tell him that he was fine, and she didn't know what she was talking about!

Hehe I was wandering through the mall about an hour away from here and looking through the display case for fun when one of the 'sharks' started talking to me...I should have walked away right then. Get this, he offered me 4k store credit for my ring in case I ever wanted to 'upgrade'...umm no thanks!! I told Pete at Quest and he must have about died at the nerve of this guy...the store was Fred Meyer? Never heard but apparently they are pretty big as mall jewelers.

No wonder I sucked as a salesperson, I never treated my customers like that! Clearly being honest was detriment to my career.
As a former jewelry salesperson, I just love going in there and messing with them. I do the 'dumb' act, and they fall for it everytime. My favorite time was when I referred to a marquis as 'that stone with the points on the ends'. The guy didn't even blink, he just started to talk slower. LOL
The dumber I act, the more bs they try to feed me and the more expensive the diamond they try to sell me. And everytime they say something egregiously wrong, I just let my eyes go bigger and dewier until I look like a freaking disney animal. And then I go outside and start laughing once I'm around the corner.
On rare occasions I'll go into a tiffany's or something like that and start asking about their sapphire treatments. Oh man, do they squirm.
Ok, so I'm evil and have a sick sense of humor.

my fav maul store story is the following -

FI go into one store. (lower end maul store)
us- can we see plain platinum men's wedding bands.
them -oh, we don't carry platinum, only white gold..
us - why not?
them- white gold is better
us - oh really? how's that?
them - because platinum is not gold!!
us- hrm. well, duh!

We walk into another store. (higher end maul store)
us - can we see platinum men's wbands, we see exorbitant prices
us - we ask to see white gold.
them - we don't carry white gold...
us - why not?
them - because platinum is better than white gold...
us - how so?
them - it's more precious... blah blah blah...

afterwards we were like, wow - imagine two ppl who don't know anything about jewelry - if they asked the same thing as us wouldn't they just be totally confused?!!!

Erm... Okay... One would think those are obvious... Basic geometry, anyone?

The first time I went ring shopping, on my own, I visited a jewellery store that has a pretty big chain in my province. The stones were G/H colour, I clarity, good cut. They were definitely yellowish and looked like frozen spit; the only reason they sparkled was because of the jewelry lights.  A LOT of people I know get stuff there, it's awful.

And there was the time when I went shopping with my boyfriend and we asked the lady at a store if we could see .50ct solitaires. Without even knowing my boyfriend's budget, she started telling me that .50ct are very big and expensive and I just want one because "50 points sounds good". Wha...?? Ok, if you don't want us to buy from you it's fine...

We've talked to a couple of nice people though. One man in particular was really knowlegeable and friendly, and we chatted for about half an hour about the 4Cs. When I told him I educated myself on diamonds, he gave me a look and told me to be careful about what some salespeople told me, because sometimes they don't really know. So I told him I've been reading about it, and he was really pleased to (finally!) have an educated customer. It was great talking with him, and he really helped me in educating my boyfriend, insisting that cut (yes, cut!) is the most important of the 4Cs. Too bad his stuff is overpriced... It would have been a pleasure doing business with him.
