Hi......As many of you know me better my now, I am asking your advice.  I had a custom made man's ring in platinum (see Three More Days if you're not familiar with my ring).  Anyway, since having the ring made, I have become a little fitness obsessed and by working out in a gym 5 days a week, I've lost 36 pounds, 7 inches around my waist and obviously fat in my fingers.  My ring no longer fits either traditional ring finger on either hand, but now fits my middle finger really well.

The ring was supposed to signify a few things.  One, I hit 50 last year.  Two, my partner and I celebrated 25 years together.  Three, I made significant changes in my life and am much much more health conscious.

My jeweler is local, so resizing wouldn't be a significant issue, but I'm hesitant to resize the ring and wind up with the traditional tell-tale line one often see's in a platinum setting which has been sized.

I'm probably being goofy anyway............but would you resize if your ring no longer fit your intended finger?

Howdy Rod  First congrats on your new fitness regime and your weight and inch loss!  You have done incredibly well and really done something good for yourself!  As to sizing the ring, I have done it many times and a good jeweller should be able to do it so you would never know.  Find a good jeweller and explain your concerns and I am sure it will be fine - I have always been very happy when I have done this and it saves worrying about losing it or not being able to wear it on the intended finger.  I would say it's a do!  Lets see if Jazmine sees this, she had her ring resized and it was fine, maybe some other platinum ring owners will be able to chime in.

Thanks Lorelei.......I appreciate the advice.  I'll be interested to hear what other's say.  I do trust my jeweler and they said they'd be happy to size it down.  They actually custom made the ring in their own shop.  They have one of the best Platinumsmith's in house.

Thanks again........

Hi Rod, I've resized a ring too and I can't tell at all where they did it. I think you should go for it so you can wear it on the finger it was intended. I surely wouldn't be happy wearing my e-ring on my middle finger, it loses the significance. Congrats on turning 50 and 25 years with your partner

To alleviate any concerns, why don't you ask to see a platinum ring they've resized?
Also make sure to ask them if resizing will loosen your setting.

Rod,
I would have it sized.  Many of my rings are platinum and I had them resized with no problems whats so ever.  Congrats on your 25 years with your partner, turning the big 50 and being more healthy!!!

Thanks......

I have seen their resizing work and it looked great.  Funny though, that when contemplating having my ring resized, all this doubt appears.  They assured me my setting would accommodate resizing and I have to trust them on that since they made the ring.  I'm not going to rush into this.  I'll wait until it's warmer here in Florida and see if my fingers swell when humidity returns (they usually do).

Kaleigh and Lorelei:  Thanks for the congrats.  I'm pretty proud of being "partnered" for 25 years!!  I am one incredibly lucky person to have been blessed with such a wonderful person to share my life.  We even work together (he works for me) and my employee's call us 24 X 7 (meaning 24 hours a day, seven days a week).  It would likely tax many a relationship, but it fortunately works for us.  We even joined the gym together and we help motivate each other when one of us doesn't want to go to the gym after work.

Rod, you are an inspiration, you obviously have a true partnership in every way, 25 years is an incredible achievement!  You have every right to be proud

Aww shucks.......I'm blushing..........Let's see if we make it through this weekend.  Why, you might ask?  Well, we sold our beutiful custom designed home directly on Tampa Bay, over 6 months ago.  It's condo time for us.  We don't want a yard or anything dealing with exterior maintenance to deal with, so we bought a condo (in a brand new highrise under construction) on Tampa Bay over 15 months ago.  It's located on Bayshore Boulevard, Tampa's most famous street and home of (supposedly) the worlds longest waterfrong sidewalk, but I digress.......The people who bought our house offered to let us stay in the house through mid-March, which they figured was safe since the condo was supposed to ready last November.  Alas, it's not ready and we have to do the double move.  We've been working out and not packing, so tomorrow the mover is coming to pack us and Saturday, move everything into storage, while we move into a fully furnished corporate apartment.  Stress is the order of the day and likely will be through the weekend as well.

Congrats on your many achievements!  I can't even get my DH to go to the gym with me.  Do you know how hard it is to wake up and get to the gym when there's still a warm body in the bed?  ACK.    Your ring is a wonderful commemoration and you should definitely get it sized to fit.  If you're worried, you could also do the horseshoe sizer thing inside the ring, but a good jeweler should do the work without you ever being able to tell it was sized.

Congratulations Rod on joining my generation (it's good to see others in my age group here), on the lost weight, and especially on the successful 25 year relationship.  That is so rare anymore; it's a real accomplishment.

As for resizing a platinum ring, I've had it done many times and never had a line show.  Just make sure your bench jeweler is capable of dealing with platinum, as he must be if he custom made the ring in the first place.

And good luck on the move!

Rod, definatly resize. That fabulous ring signifies so much of your life. Wouldn't you like it to 'fit' properly, like your life is 'fitting' together. A rolling ring is agravating! And you SHOULD wear it on your ring finger since you and your partner are 'married' in every since of the word. Hopefully, one day in this country your union can be recognized in the legal since.

I've congratulated you before on your incredible 25 year partnership so now let me say congrats on the big '5-0' and on your weight loss!!! And kudos for a healthier life!!

Thanks for the kudos Moon...........Today's move day, what a stressful day to say the least.  Wouldn't you know that the built-in wall oven decided to have an electrical meltdown on the move out day.  Amazing that we were able to get Kitchen Aide repair people here, but a 4 year old oven needs a $645 repair.  Word of advice on Kitchen Aide.  Virtually every KA appliance we put in our house 4 years ago has needed service.  I will never own another KA product again.

I will have the ring resized, but I'm going to wait for warmer weather and my fingers to do their normal summertime swelling.  I tend to like my ring a little tighter.  Not so tight it can't be removed, but tight enough that it doesn't rotate too easily.

Anway..........I won't have an internet connection for a few days, so I wanted to say thanks for everyone's kind wishes.  Will be back on-line next week.

Best to everyone...........

Wow...congrats on 25 years and your healthy new way of life   That's amazing!
I had my platinum ring resized and there was a sizing line.  However I was later told by another more trusted jeweler that the reason for the line was that the first jeweler used white gold to resize and not platinum (he's the same jeweler that used white gold prongs instead of platinum too ).  Anyway, I've seen many of my friends resize their platinum settings with no problems.  I think as long as you have a trusted jeweler you will be AOK!
BTW...we did a double move last year and it was soooooo not fun   We had a month to go between the time our new house was built and our old house was sold so we put everything that we didn't need in storage and moved in with family (horrible mistake)!  It was the biggest pain in the ass having to move twice.  I said they'd have to drag me kicking and screaming out of this house as I'm NEVER moving again.  Hope your move was better!

Why not try one of those sizing horseshoe springs (can't remember the name) as a stopgap before you decide on the correct size?

we had to resize my DH's platinum band from an 11.5 to a 10.5 and there is no tell tale line whatsoever.

My favorite color is sparkle!!!

Congratulations on 25 year together AND the new and healthy lifestyle! Both are no small feat. :) I've had platinum rings re-sized and have never seen a telltale line or had any other problems. I agree with the others -- just be sure to go to a reputable jeweler and you should be fine. My original e-ring and w-band are both 1 size too big on me and I don't wear them anymore at all because the looseness and spinning drives me nuts. I just haven't gotten around to resizing them yet. For you, I vote for re-sizing!!

Congratulations! Your achievements are an inspiration!

I second the horseshoe spring idea while you're waiting to have it sized; that way you'll still wear it on the intended finger (and you should! It's a beautiful way to symbolize your wonderful relationship!!) until the summer.

First off congratulations on your weight loss! That is so great! I am having similar issues. My ring came in too large and I have lost a few pounds (NOTHING like you) so my ring fits, but it very loose. I am going to get sizing beads put in since I only need it 1/4 of a size smaller. If you have a bigger difference (and with all your weight loss you probably do) I would get it resized. It sounds like you trust they would do a good job and it seems special enough to take the risk so you can wear it on the intended finger. Good luck!

Thanks again.........

Thanks Lorelei.......You can't imagine how frustrating it was to put your life in storage and move into a dinky, 700 square foot, fully furnished apartment from our beautiful 3700 square foot custom home on the water.  At least we can walk to shops and restaurants and the Gym, which will be pretty nice.

I missed all my friends on PS and am so glad to be connected to the world again.  What on earth did we do before Al Gore invented the internet?????????????  LOL

The dinky apartment (it is actually pretty nice, just small small small) is in Hyde Park, walking distance to the shops, theatres and restaurants.  I don't know when you live there last, but Jacobson's closed and became Lifestyle Family Fitness center.  It draws way more people than when it was a department store.

this is a little trick that i've picked up to help keep my ring on my ring finger, and not lose it. (i've lost a bunch of weight too, but don't want to get my ring sized more than 1 time if I can avoid it, and i am still losing more weight)

I tried the temp ring sizers, they are just not strong enough or wide enough for most guys' rings. however, with that said, i just purchased a thin (3mm)yet substantial(heavy) plain silver ring in the correct size for your finger right now, and wear it on the outer side of the ring on your ring finger. that way it snugs almost under the other ring, and is hardly noticeable. Since it is a ring, and much more substantial in metal that those ring sizers it doesn't bend etc. Acutally, I am almost growing to like the two rings on the same finger. I don't know what i'll do when i go back to just 1 ring again. The silver doesn't look exactly like the platinum, but it is temporary, and most people haven't noticed.

hope this helps get that ring back onto the right finger. (and by that i mean your left!)

Hey, congratulations on losing weight as well.  And thanks for the suggestion on wearing a second ring to hold my ring in place.  I'm one of those overly "anal" types though and it would drive me crazy to think the 2nd ring might scratch my platinum ring, so I'm not sure I could do that, but I do appreciate the thought VERY much.

It's funny that since I wrote my question, it has warmed up a bit here in sunny FL.  My ring is fitting a bit more snug with the higher humidity level.  It's on my right hand though (dominant hand) and it was supposed to be on my left.

I think I'll probably just take the plunge and have them resize it.  I spoke with my jeweler last week and they said they'd resize it in just one day and I wouldn't be able to see a resizing line.  They're really quite quality conscious and custom pieces are truly works of art.

Thanks again for the suggestion!!

Glad it all went well and you are back with us Rod

Thanks Lorelei.......You can't imagine how frustrating it was to put your life in storage and move into a dinky, 700 square foot, fully furnished apartment from our beautiful 3700 square foot custom home on the water. At least we can walk to shops and restaurants and the Gym, which will be pretty nice.

I missed all my friends on PS and am so glad to be connected to the world again. What on earth did we do before Al Gore invented the internet????????????? LOL

I can imagine the move was frustrating Rod, but it will be great once you have settled in and have all those fun places so close.  I was just thinking too  the other day, how did we manage before the internet???  It has been such a lifeline for me, especially recently.

Nothing is more sacred as the bond between horse and rider...no other creature can ever become so emotionally close to a human as a horse. When a horse dies, the memory lives on because an enormous part of his owner's heart, soul, very existence dies also...but that can never be laid to rest, it is not meant to be...
