Although we still have 15 months until our wedding, I've been looking at place settings online.  What are ya'll picking?  I'm torn between going for something very classic and austere and something a little more colorful.

I'm going through the exact same process as you!

One thing I was told to consider is whether or not you entertain a lot.  If you only have guests over once or twice a year, it not be worth getting formal china.  I fell in love with a Waterford China, but decided it was too expensive.  I'm considering getting just plain white dinnerware and using color with place mats, etc.  Basically something that can be dressed up or dressed down.

Let us know what you decide!

We've decided not to register for formal china.  I have no intentions on entertaining unless...I mean maybe a dinner party here or there but nothing that my everyday where won't work for.

Same. I'd much rather register for thing we'll use than things that'll sit in a china cabinet, only to see the light of day once a year!

ETA: For everyday eating, we both really like this:

Crate and Barrel: "Audrey"

I really like the Audrey pattern as well, but just to warn everyone, according to my local Crate and Barrel, that pattern has been discontinued.

I was there yesterday and it was still on display, but the card with the display said "discontinued".

You can still buy it online, so I don't know when they will actually stop selling it, though.

We are not china-type folk, so we just registered for everyday dishes from Crate and Barrel. I like the lumpy and natural look of ours, I think they're called rusticwhite. FI likes the size of the mug, so that settled it for us. I can't imagine us ever needing china, but white plates seemed to be something that we could dress up if we needed to.

like others, i'm not registering for fine china -- it's not practical for us at this stage in our lives!

Same here.  My mother has given my her fine china - it's not really what I would pick myself but I doubt we will ever use it so... it'll just sit in the china cabinet.  I wasn't even going to register for everyday wear because what I have already is functional, but I really wanted deeper bowls and salad plates, which I don't have with my current set, so I found this set below at Dillard's.  I like that it's got a little bit of a pattern/texture, and the off-white will be fun to mix with other serverwear type items.

We LOVE to entertain, but our style is laid back and casual.  We already have everyday dishes, so decided to go for the china- as long as it wasn't fussy.

We picked Crate & Barrel's White Pearl

Thanks for everyone's responses thus far!  I actually have a few more questions:

1) I'm having a really hard time finding causal dishes that I like.  Would it be okay to register for two sets of formal dishes and use one type for everyday and one type for entertaining?  Or would people think we were really greedy?  We would probably register for 6 sets of "everyday" formal and 12 sets of "real" formal.  Are formal dishes a lot more fragile/prone to scratching than everyday ones?  We would def. buy dishwasher/microwave safe ones.

2) How many of each type of dish are you registering for?  Are 6 and 12 per set, respectively, a good number?

3) What are some department stores that have a really extensive selection of formal dishes?  It's one thing to look at them online, but we'd also like to see them in person.  We don't have a Macy's around here, but we have most other department stores.

Thanks so much!!

We registered for Crate and Barrel "Aspen," and the "Dune" silverware.  We decided not to get formal dishes and crystal.  We wouldn't use it.  The Aspen can be dressed up with napkins and tablecloth, and made to look formal, but when we are ready to retire our current everyday use, it can take its place.  Besides, we live in an apartment that has NO storage and limited cabinet space, and formal stuff would just end up in storage.

We registered for 12 settings, and 2 serving bowls.

I'm only registered for dishes with Pfaltzgraff. We don't formally entertain.. so.. my Tea Rose dishes will be fine I love them, I've always loved them and they are heavy duty suckers. I would like an eight place setting to make a total of 12.. We have five kiddos together, so.. when the whole family is together.. we'd use them for sure! lol

We have decided not to register (we're asking for gift cards to Lowe's instead since my guy works there and gets a discount.)  My mother gave me her wedding china so I really don't need formal china.  It's a beautiful Noritake pattern (Epoch), white and silver.  I just bought myself new every day china when Jim moved in a month ago.  It's Corelle's Spice Alley stoneware pattern in Royal White.  I never thought I'd buy Corelle because I thought they only made plastic but this is very nicely made, very sturdy and modern, and I bought eight place settings for about what my friends paid for one setting of their Denby:

http://www.corelle.com/index.asp?mod=patternShowroom

I actually bought mine at Wal-Mart for $35.00 for each set of 4 place settings!
