Black Diamonds for Men? |

I've been browsing through some wedding bands, just to get an idea of what I'll get my future husband. At first, he wanted platinum until I told him it was softer than gold and would bend easier. Then he tried a titanium band and loved how light and comfortable it was. My problem is that I feel bad buying him a $100 wedding band when he's spending thousands on my engagement ring. He's dead set against a diamond band because he thinks they're too "feminine", but I saw a black diamond band that was gorgeous and very "manly" looking. Are black diamonds a good option for a man's wedding band? I was thinking of a simple titanium band with several stones or even a single stone, like this one: ![]() I'm curious to hear everyone's thoughts on the subject. And also wondering how you would grade black diamonds. Are they the same as any other colored diamond? |

I guess I just haven't seen a black diamond I thought was particularly nice yet. For whatever reason, none that I have seen have much sparkle. I'm a guy and I wanted my diamond to sparkle, but that's me and may not be what interests your husband to be. I've also worn platinum for the last several years, and while I haven't hit my ring with a hammer, I certainly have banged it into walls, railings, etc., and I've never had a problem with platinum bending. If anything, my platinum rings have held up far better than any of the gold rings I've ever owned. But that's just my experience. I personally don't like the lighter feel of Titanium. They feel hollow to me. Again, just my opinion. If your intended is in the construction business and is working with tools all the time, titanium could be a wise choice for him. Good Luck......... Hm, I've had several jewelers tell me that platinum isn't as strong as gold, though I'd always heard it was stronger. Either way, he really likes the titanium for some reason, even though I prefer platinum or gold, but its his ring. And I'm pretty sure he doesn't care about sparkles, though I'm definitely with you. Black diamonds never really appealed to me either. He's just not into jewelry at all. The only jewelry he wears is his college ring and a watch.

Well I'm betting those jewelers who were "Anti-Platinum" don't have a Platinumsmith in house and since Platinum is more expensive than gold, it's easier to discourage its' purchase. None-the-less, your intended should get what appeals to him and it doesn't matter what anyone else's tastes are. Perhaps you could get one of those bands like you showed, with say 4 or 5 small stones and alternate between black and white diamonds. This would offer a little contrast and he might actually (even if he never admits it) like the sparkle of a nice little white diamond. "Got Diamond? |

I've thought of that and I think might actually make for an attractive ring, but I'm not sure he'd agree to it because of some manly anti-diamond thing he has going on. I think I'm going to try and find an example of one and see what he says. Thanks for the advice.

Just be a little generous when he says he's been thinking of that sports car he has always wanted... ![]() In all seriousness, just last week I saw a male wedding black diamond ring someone on PS had made from whiteflash, it's in the "Show me the Ring" area. I think Black diamonds are very masculine, very cool. I'd be curious to know more about them but all I've found is a little blurb from Garry's colored diamonds site. Black diamonds don't seem especially expensive but then I'm sure it's impossible to find really nice black diamonds anyway. edit: Mrssalvo was WAY ahead of me about the WF ring!!!

If he likes the titanium bands then go that route. Some guys just don't want diamonds in their wedding bands.

Date: 1/31/2006 3:20:56 PM Most black diamonds are treated that color. The diamonds are generally very heavily included and not pretty and it makes more sense to treat them. More uses this way.

I just found a website that lets you build your own titanium rings. You can even add platinum inlays (which he likes) and gemstones, including black and white diamonds. They also offer black sapphires. Would those be a better choice than black diamonds?

There's several other options for mens rings than diamonds. If he likes the titanium band, how about a titanium band with something inset into it? My favorite choices are 22k gold, platinum, wood, or mokume gane. Mokume gane is probably the most expensive option. Let's face it, the most challenging part is making sure they wear it. My father is on his 5th wedding ring (and first wife). So the more comfortable, light, and um... low key it is, the better our chances are he'll wear it. What is his watch like? That might give you an insight into his preferences in jewelry. My bf won't even wear a watch so I rather have my work cut out for me when the time comes.

As far as his watch, right now he has a pretty simply one, but he wants a really fancy TAG Heuer. ![]() He just got home from work a little while ago and I showed him some pictures and he likes the black/white diamond idea. So, I'm thinking I'll get a titanium band with a platinum inlay and 3-5 alternating white and black diamonds. I think it would look nice.

My husband's original wedding ring was two tone gold with three diamonds (he picked it out). He never wears it. 2 years ago we got him a titanium one, and I don't think he's ever taken it off. He works on a golf course, and is pretty hard on rings, and hasn't had any problems with the titanium one. The black diamonds would look great in titanium, I guess less sparkle=more manly? must be a guy thing!

LOL. Since titanium is really strong and light, its just perfect for him, and most men. Especially since the average man won't take his ring in to be cleaned and get repairs. ![]() I just saw this ring and thought it was pretty. The black and white contrast looks great with that band color.

Just an update: After consulting him, his ring will look a lot like this one. The platinum inlay will be a mm or so wider and the two outside and the center stones will be black diamonds. Sound good?

Looks great to me, I love the platinum inlay; but with such a non-descript expanse of metal of basically the same color I'd like to have some colored stones/black diamonds myself (royal blue sapphires and black diamonds for me). But I'm a different kind of guy, I guess. Also, have you looked into tungsten? I thought there was some *really* cool stuff on www.trewtungsten.com and he might like the fact it is the hardest substance known to exist. ;)

Ooh, I hadn't thought of tungsten yet. Not sure if he would like it though, since he loves the lightness of titanium. Or is tungsten light, also? I'm going to check that site right now. The diamond subject on that ring is kind of funny. After making it on a site, I liked it better with all black diamonds and he liked the alternating look better. So, we're going to going to alternate with 3 out of 5 stones being black.
