I'm in the process of getting a custom ring design and pricing. When the designer mentions "17 diamonds X 1.7 mm in shank" does that mean 17 diamonds on each side of the head? If it is the total amount in the e-ring band itself it won't be even. I can wait to ask them on Monday, but thought I would ask if anyone here knows.

I am thinking it was a mistake. You're right in that it would be on either side of the head, but would need an even number as in 16, or 18. Was this in an email, could have been a typo??

Yes it was in an email. The custom is based on a setting the presently have but with a few changes. I just looked at there setting and there are 17 on each side of the head. That might be what he means.

I have 13 (=26) on each side. Why would 17 (=34) have to be a mistake? Scintillating...

shank = the ring or band as opposed to the 'head' or setting in the center Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |

17 wouldn't be a mistake if it were 17 on each side. I was under the impression in was 17 total however. There should be an even number of diamonds total in the shank if you want both sides to be exactly the same. 17 total means that one side could have 8 and one side could have 9. Or 7 and 10, etc. So if you have 26, than you have 13 on both sides, making both sides the same. Can you post a pic of the setting?
