I'm the guy that almost dropped $4000 on a ring that would not have been worth it with Diamond.com (before I got some education here)

story here:  clicky here!

I last spoke with the sales at Diamond.com rep 2 days ago. We narrowed down some "other" possible stones and I mentioned that this time around I would NEED to have some crown and pavillion angles on the GIA cert stones before making a decision. He mentioned there was no way he'd be able to get me that info (now I know they obviously do not have those diamonds in-house) He did mention that he did have one diamond that fell within the parameters I wanted that he might be able to dig up angles for... he would get back to me.

Well he did...

I checked my email today and found he sent typed up angle information like this... I'll paste it.

Diameter           6.42 mm    (6.39-6.45)

Total Dep.         3.97 mm    61.8%

Table                3.60 mm    56.1%

Crown               34.2 degrees    (33.3 - 35.4 degrees)  14.8 %

Pavil                 41.0 degrees    (40.7 - 41.2 degrees)    43.2%

Culet                 0.5%            Very small

Girdle                2.0 %        (1.6% - 3.0%)    (Medium-Thick)

Not an absolutely horrible stone  but def not as good as good a cut as stones I'd been looking at (6.42 diameter should be more around 6.50 for a 1ct stone) and advised about here at pricescope.com (White flash has some great stuff). I threw the #'s in the cut adviser and the numbers he gave me did pretty well... here we go:

Factor Grade

Light Return               Excellent
Fire                           Very Good
Scintillation                 Very Good
Spread                       Very Good

But I couldn't remember what stone he was talking about...then I noticed he'd also sent the GIA report but pasted into the document and it looked very very small... I tried to discern the numbers but couldn't... So I copied and pasted it into word and enlarged it.... That's when  I noticed I might be being scammed...see if you can notice the discrepancies with the info about the diamond above to the info on the GIA report.... I can't insert the PDF file but I"ll type it up.

Measurement: 6.40-6.17*5.98mm
Weight: 1.01 ct
Depth:  61.8
Table:  56
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick faceted
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Very Good
Clarity Grade:   SI1
Color Grade:    I

Opinions please!
Can you believe this? I cancelled my order btw....

Maybe the guy just attached the GIA report of a dif diamond by mistake... Maybe I'm overreacting... I don't know. ( I used those specs to search their entire inventory for the diamond but did not find it) Whatever it may be, my experience with them has not been very good so I'll be moving on.

You've made a few mistakes in the dimensions, I think...6.40-6.47-3.98mm would be more accurate.

And using those figures, if the top set is from the Sarin, they agree with what is on the cert. within the usual margin of error.

Can't tell you anything about the angles though.

That makes a heck of a lot more sense. I looked at the pdf file and it looks like with the photocopying that 6.17 may actually be a 6.47 You're right! It's a good thing too because I kind of liked the sales guy. The prices and the diamond quality not so much but the guy not so bad.

The sales guy quoted $4,280 and would not go any lower for the stone above... I've found examples of what seems to be better cut ... say like this: click for almost $400 less and that's without the additional discount pricescope participants get with White flash. The stone is an I instead of a J though so... it might not be so bad. What do you think?
