OK, I am going to some jewelry places this weekend to look at some loose diamond stones with my girlfriend. Personally, I can barely tell the difference between glass and diamond, but after reading this forum, I have a better idea of what to look for.

Judging from the tutorials, I should judge the stone first by the cut. The colors and clarity will vary from eye to eye. On this trip, I like to get an idea of what cuts, colors, and clarity that she likes.

My worry is the lighting. A friend of mine said that stores often have a special light that makes everything look good. Is there some way around this?

Anyone have suggestions or stories on how to approach this? I never purchase a diamond in my life.

Cup the diamond in your hand. Hold it under the table. Take it to the window. If they let you (and some jewelers have been happy to let me), take it *outside* so you can see it clearly under natural light.

Hi Chagall.

Typical jewelry store lighting is indeed favorable for diamonds.  When possible, view them away from direct overhead lights.

If you would like the PS community to help you assess cut in any round diamond you're considering, this topic is useful for learning what information to acquire.  Of course, in all situations your own eyes will be the most useful tools available to you.
