Yeah, this came about because workers complained about having to work into the evening due to the afternoon siesta time that was traditionally taken.  Now, they're working 40 hour weeks like US civil servants.  I guess it's a big deal for them.  They will have regular 8 hour work days is all.  As a US Federal Employee  I can use up to 13 days of my sick leave for family also.  As they said in the piece, they're getting in line with most of Europe with not taking time in the afternoon.  Italy used to do "siesta time" also and I'm not sure if they still do.

Nor am I, but my husband was an Italian citizen whose parents still lived in Italy when we were married, so we travelled there regularly during his parents' lifetimes. The last time that I was there there was still the two hour "interruption" during which everyone went home from school or work and shops closed so that people could have a family meal at home. Once shops reopened they were open later into the evening than shops used to be here in the United States. It seems to me that stores are open all the time here, now!
