Does anyone know how long WF and GOG have been in business?  Their trade-up policy is attractive, however I am concerned that they may not be around in 10 or 15 years.  Does anyone else have this concer?

Nope.  Both have been around for quite a long time, and I have every confidence they will continue to be around.

No.

Both businesses are run by people who intend to keep running their business.

I admit you raise an interesting and valuable question - how do you know a business will exist in the future and be able to honor its policies and warranties?

The answer:  You don't.  You cannot name me a single business that exist today that has any guarantee that they will exist in the future.  Some will fail; but everyone is subject to merger and buyout mania.

One of the problems that I face at work is that I normally do $100,000 - $250,000 per year with a certain contractor who provides a specialized service to the nuclear power industry.  They also work for a whole series of nuclear power plants.  They run the industry training classes on the subject.  They are the "experts" in their field - they litereally wrote the book on the subject (3/4 of all industry publications on thier field of expertise were written by them - and the other 1/4 by an older guy who helped with the intial research on the issue, but does not provide the field service work on the issue).

But, they were actaully a 4 person division of a much larger company (about 100 people).  The much larger company competed primarily in the fossil power and chemical industry - and wasn't doing so well.  While that 4 person nuclear division was spinning off 40%-50% profit each year - their parent was not.

The chief competitor of the parent just bought them with the intention of scarfing a few people, some equipment, and closing their largerst competitor.  Could not care less about that little 4 person nuclear service group; and has no interest in serving the nuclear power industry.

An attempt was made to spin that group off - but the new buyer specifically wanted some of the equipment that the group had.  No dice.  3 or the 4 employees did not have any real resources so they were not in a position to "buy" that division and be employee owned.

Who would have guess that the industry experts - the people who invented the methods that the NRC accepts in one area - would just go "poof" and disapear with only a couple of weeks notice.

While it is true that at least two of the people involved will probably end up somewhere still serving the nuclear industry - it may be in jobs that are not directly related to what they were doing.  Loss of the nuclear industry certified quality program and all of the plant specific records will be both hard and costly to reconstruct.

So to answer your question.  You cannot tell:  But these companies are as good as bet as any to be arround.

Unfortunately what perry says is true...I remember when Sears Homelife went out of business around here, they had been around for what seemed like a long time. What about Emporium, anyone remember those? Gosh and gone for so many years now. The Wherehouse? I know people who still have gift cards there!

The trade-up policies are great but in reality there is no guarantee that any of these businesses or even offline jewelers will continue to be around 10/20/40 years from now...we can hope of course!! This is the reasoning I give my beloved husband as to why the upgrades should happen sooner rather than later...hee!

LOL... I could appreciate that however I think it would creep some folks out .    My Batmobile would look great pulling into it though.

I hear what ya'll are saying about business' being around for a while then disappearing all of a sudden.  We see it happen frequently around here and we've seen it happen on the net quite a bit too.  Luckily my 17 and 13 year olds are taking an interest in the family business and my daughter will be going to GIA when she gets out of high school for her G.G. degree although I would support whatever career move she takes interest in.

Peace,

That's great news that your daughter would like to pursue her G.G. diploma after high school.

There's actually a store up in Sault st Marie Michigan that has a cave in it.  Probably no bats but a diamond mine.

DF & Strm, LOL...Happy holidays

It bodes well for companies with an internet presence, whether exclusively on the net or B&M/V (briack & mortar/virtual), that diamond and jewelry sales captured only 2% of the market 4 years ago, up to 8% this year.  That number, as well as the percentage of people who research on the 'net, is growing.

Funny enough.. this one address gets mentioned allot on the color forum.

The first shop of my jeweler's here had a 'cave' decor too - complete with castings after real carst formations. When the shop changed owners the cave features stayed - it makes a rather intriguing tea shop now.

I'm with ya 110% man.  Even locally, when possible I bring my biz to the mom & pops.  Our country and free enteprise system was founded on the mom and pop B&M's.  My daughter has been working with us now for the last year or 2 and my son is starting to work with us now.  He has also expressed interest in working with us as well after he graduates.  Of course my mom is thrilled with the idea and we like to keep the fam close.  People often wonder how we can all work together and get along so well.  I think its because we're all in seperate departments.  HAHA.   jk... we really do all work together well.

How long did you work with the family business before you went out appraising Jeff?

I'm betting GOG will be around for awhile.  See, I have an illness (and I know I'm not alone ).... shrinkage sets in awfully quickly.  I'm on my third diamond from GOG, two upgrades from the initial purchase.  It's not as if I'm in a rush (I like mara's thought process....I'll keep that thought in mind for future use), but every so often I see a stone at GOG that is bigger and/or better with my name on it.  The husband just rolls his eyes and says something to the effect of 'what day is the road trip.  I know there will be no peace until you get it.'  It's a jungle out there... it's kill or be killed

Hi Rhino:
I worked with BOTH of my parents for twelve years. Talk about stress!! My two kids 21/22 have no interest in the jewelry biz. They would both rather fight crime. Both are graduating this year with criminal justice/psych degrees. Like you, I'm behind them 1000%. Maybe you could loan them your BATMOBILE to help fight crime? That is QUITE a vehicle!!!! Gotta mow the grass more often, though.

Thinking of the high tech stuff on GoodOldGold.com - the bat mobile image seems quite well chosen

Introducing the Tasmanian bat (that's where the background comes from!).

Thinking of the high tech stuff on GoodOldGold.com - the bat mobile image seems quite well chosen

(sorry for distracting from a serious thread)

Cropping the picture to overlay a desert scean will not help you hide the secret of your miricle plant food.

Sorry to let this out, but Johnathan has been developing a lawn fertilzer on the side for those who want great lush lawns and plants.

There have been two development problems so far:

1)  Grass and plants grow like mad - and often reach previously unheard of hights and sizes.

2)  The fertilizer residue is extreemly tough on lawn mowers - thus, lawn mowing is reduced or eliminated.

The results are almost jungle like.

Of couse, the one key of the product is that it would be a natuarl extension of his jewelry business.

The fertilizer:  1/4 to 1/2 point diamonds.  Sprinkle 20 Lb's of that on your lawn and see what happens.  Scientist cannot reasonably explain the results, and it works best when the diamonds are properely cut into ideal shapped crystals.  New age scientist do point out that this is nothing more than the rusults of proper focusing of energy with a crystal - and admit that diamond has the ability to focus more energy than other forms of crystals (much more).

I don't know if Johnathan was ready to start selling it yet, one problem of couse is getting ideal cut 1/4 to 1 point diamonds.  But, ask him for a quote on 20 Lbs and see if he is ready to go into production on this business venture.

I'd suggest sprinkling it on the flower bed instead of the lawn to keep things in control.  Just be sure that it is totally weed free - and be prepared for 20 ft tall roses, 60 foot tall sunflowers, and other monsterous flowers.

I was trying to talk Johnathan into giving me a pound to try on my giant pumpkin seeds.  I am hoping for about a 10 ton pumpkin - so that I am the clear all time winner of the giant pumkin contest.

LMAO ... love the edit Ana.  Thanks for the lawn trim!  That miracle grow is really something else!

Perry ... I was going to save that for the new site but you had to go an let the cat out of the bag.   We have successfully found a couple of factories that will cut us ideal melee down to .0025ct and its not limited to grass and plants.

Oddly enough when people saw the effects it had to make things grow we were contacted by a few men clients who were taking viagra.

I was so busy I didn't have a chance to jump in here.

One of the fantastic things about working here is that Whiteflash has such a powerful and successful history behind it - from 5 generations of rich diamond history to success in the highly price competitve world of computers:

http://www.whiteflash.com/info/about_us.aspx

People involved in the company have a proven track record from our CEO down. Our staff works so hard that we often say that they work as if the company is their own.

I think that the other fact that should make consumers feel comfortable with WF is that we have a very large in house inventory that actually belongs to us.

We are a solid company, well financed and profitable and our responsible business plan aims to make sure we are around for many years to come.
