The hills are alive... Tonight I have been watching on TV "The Sound of Music" - one of my favorite oldies. What many people these days may not realize - is that this movie is in fact based on a true story. Here is the history as I recall it: Captian Von Trapp was a WW I German Submarine caption (a war hero of the submarine force in fact). He settled in Austria swearing off war and became wealthy. He had I believe children His wife did die when they had a total of 7 children (I belive some of them may have been adopted). Maria was indeed sent from the convent to be a governess - and did marry Captian Von Trapp; and together they were a musical family. After Germany took over Austria at the start of WW II they did try to press Captian Von Trapp into service (he would have been a senior officer of the WW II german submarine force). They did in fact escape into freedome at the last minute - and eventually endid up in the US. They performed music in the US; and eventually settled in the New England area. The family built and ran a Musical training camp and lodge - which still exist today. They were never able to return to Austria for more than a visit as the Germans had confenscated the Van Trapp mansion and properties (it became the headquarter mansion for the German Occupation) and both Captian Von Trapp and Maria lived to good age. Their was a book about the Von Trap Family Singers which was the basis for the idea behind the movie. I remember reading the book when I was a teenager (long after it was written). Maria initially did not like the movie because it took a great many linceses, so to say, with the truth - but in the end accepted it becuase it told the essential story in a positive manner (I recall hearing her talk about this once when she was older - my memories of her comments are different than the current history listed in the history link below). If anyone is interested in the history - or just want to get away to a butifull place - the Von Trapp Family lodge is still in business (mainly now as a vacation lodge). That has to be one of my most favorite movies. I saw part of it tonight as I was getting dressed to go out. Love the music. Gets me every time I see it. Thanks Perry for providing the history behind it. Very interesting!!!

My mother was a professional singer - Mezzo-Soprano - and for years "Climb Every Mountain" was on her 'favorite things' list (nice Belle!) for recitals, private parties and other engagements. She still sings, but is retired now. It has been a long time since she graced us with that one. Perry, your post brought back a host of great memories: This was one of several movies our whole family used to hunker down for in front of a fire with hot cocoa and warm woolen mittens when I was growing up. I'm watching it right now....DH doesn't like this film, but I find it one of the classics like "Wizard of Oz" or "Gone with the Wind." Gotta watch it whenever it comes on!!! Thanks for the history behind the movie!

As a kid I literally watched the Sound of Music four times a weekend (twice Sat, twice Sun), EVERY weekend for YEARS! My poor mom! I owe her big for putting up with that! I would forward through the stuff I thought was boring, and rewind to hear my favorite parts a couple of times. Haven't watched it in awhile though... maybe it's time for another marathon!!! LC

I LOVE THE SOUND OF MUSIC!!!! My Hubby doesn't though, he groans each time it is on as he knows very soon I will be yodelling and screeching " high on a hill was a lonely goat herd".......  Belle, I 'm off now to have some TEA WITH JAM AND BREAD WITH JAM WITH JAM

Definitely one of my all time favorites! My husband cannot stand musicals of any kind, so my 11-year-old daughter watches with me.

A little poking arround reveals that... The Hills are still alive.... with the sound of music. Perry, Thanks for sharing the history. I didn't know was based off a true story. How interesting! I love The Sound of Music. One of my favs of all time.. Julie Andrews is awesome.

i LOVE that movie and i watched last night as well!!!! I know EVERY song and sang along. My daughters 12 and it's the first time I've been able to get her to watch!

Ah, I love the movie as well. I remember reading the book a long time ago but I don't remember much from it. We just bought the new DVD and I'm looking forward to watching the Mia Farrow screen test and the A&E Biography etc.
