Hello everyone!  I wanted to get your thoughts on something.....My boyfriend and I recently went to a local jewelry exchange so that he could get an idea of the type of setting I would like.  I like antique style settings...I found one there that I absolutely LOVE.  It's alittle difficult to explain, but it had alot of metal work(if that's what you call it?), it had millgrain detail....anyway, the setting was in 18K white gold, I really want platinum.  So when I asked they could make it in platinum, the jeweler told me that you should never get an antique type setting in platinum because of its tendency to scratch.  He said that over time it would ruin the design of the ring.....is this true?

I found a ring on whiteflash with similar design, although it was a prong setting, with 1 small emerald on each side and then the rounds around the rest of the band....

I have never heard this before. My first thought was of the Tacori settings and how eleborate some of those are, and they are in platinum. Personally, I would rather have it in platinum because it is harder than WG. I think that if the platinum alloy used is a good one (95% plat, 5% ruthenium perhaps) you would be fine.

For my ring in progress...which is being made by Whiteflash, I have milgrain edging, pave, and any survace that is plan, I had it engraved, so that it would have an antique feel, and camoflauge any dings or scratches that come with normal wear & tear.  Just an idea.

Platinum can definatly handle the antique look. I have a platinum Tacori ering with miligrain and engraving all the way around, and my wedding band is plain on the bottom half (palm side). Ive been wearing my ering for a year and it looks great... ive been wearing my wedding band for 5 months and you can see scratches all over it. The engraving actually helps cover up all those little scratches you get! I wish i had my camera with me at work so i could take a pic!

No matter what metal you choose, over time the engraving and miligrain can loose their definition and wont look as crisp. This is especially true if you wear two rings next to each other (ering and wband).

There are tons of sites out there with antique-type platinum rings. Some of my favs are Antique Engagement Rings, Fay Cullen, Saturn JewelsTacori and Kirk Kara

I think that jeweler was fibbin', hoping that you'd buy what he already had - white gold. Platinum has been used for a LONG LONG time. I see "real" antique platinum rings at auction that have held up ... no ring goes without some wear, but I wouldn't pick white gold over platinum for that reason if you like platinum better.

For reference - I found white gold antique style ring I liked and asked for it to be re-made in platinum. Now the jeweler is offering a platinum version to other customers also.

Thanks for the response.  I was thinking the same thing decodelighted.  It sucks though, because i absolutley LOVE the setting, and would have even considered just getting the WG, but the guy was such a jerk, I don't want to go there again....I hope to find something similar.  Well thanks again, I though it sounded completely crazy to me when he said it, but I just wanted to see what you guys thought!

many of the top designers/bench guys will only use platinum. I know Leon Mege only works with Plat. and Mark Morrell just started doing platinum only rings as well. My grandmothers filagree/pave ring is almost 100 years old, she wore 24/7 and after a polish it looked good as new. Plat. will hold up just fine..
