Hey all,

New to the forum. When my girlfriend and I got engaged, we decided we would rather have a down payment on a house then waste money on an engagement ring, but I have a little extra money this year so I really wanted to surprise her (she's not expecting anything and it isn't important to her, but she'll appreciate it nonetheless). I was looking at a diamond online and since I can't have a real picture of it, I'm using the grading report instead. What do you guys thing of this report? I wanted something in the .5 carat range and didn't want to spend too much over $1000.

Well, the table is a bit large.  If you search for similar emerald cuts on this site, you'll notice that it automatically cuts off the table percentage at 67.  Because of this, I wonder what criteria the vendor uses to determine an "ideal" cut.  Often we hear stories of vendors who try to confuse customers into thinking that ideal or excellent polish and symmetry mean an ideal cut, but your symmetry is only "good," so that can't be it.

I'm not saying that this isn't a good diamond for the price, just that I wouldn't assume that the cut is "ideal."  There is no real industry standard stating what an ideal emerald cut is anyway.

The price seems on par with other online listings.

I think surprising your girlfriend with a ring is a great idea!  Let us know if we can be of any more assistance!

How about this one? It's slightly more money ($1,148) but 0.01 less carats. It is also an Asscher. I'm undecided on which style I like better, but this one seems to have better stats. Again, the site claims the cut is "Ideal."

You're spending a lot of money for the color and clarity
I would maximize you buy with a G or H color and a VS2
