So the holidays are here and I am wondering, what is everyones favorite dish that they bust out for this time of the year? Mine is my Dad's homeade cornbread stuffing. I swear I don't need anything but that. I could live off that and water to down it with... :)

What about y'all?

MASHED POTATOES big time. We don't eat them almost any other time of the year except the holiday, so between now and Christmas I eat as much of them as possible. with slightly salty gravy, yum!

For me, it's a tie between stuffing and sweet potatoes!  There is nothing better than my grandma's homemade stuffing, and sweet potatoes fried in butter until the edges are slightly crispy...My mouth is watering just thinking about it!    I can't wait until tomorrow!

I could definitely make a meal out of mashed potatoes and my dad's cornbread stuffing recipe.  That's all I need! - carbs, carbs, and more carbs.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I love yams & sweet potatoes.  I could probably drink a whole can of gravy, too.  That gives me an idea:  Did anyone ever mix gravy with a shot of Jack Daniels or Southern Comfort?

Madame Bijoux, what would you call that shot?  Sour potato mash?  That's a pretty hilarious thought, I bet I could get my husband to do it after he'd been at a Bears game all day...

My favorite thing to pig out on is my mom's fruit salad...it's an old family recipe that's never been written down.  I don't even know exactly what's in it as the dressing, but I know it has Miracle Whip, sour cream, mini marshmallows, bananas, maraschino cherries, applies, mandarin oranges, and pineapple chunks. It probably sounds slightly gross to someone who has never had it, but I'm telling you it's like you'd died and gone to heaven.  It's best after it's set in the fridge for a few hours and the mini marshmallows start to "fluff" up a bit.  I am not going to my parent's house for Thanksgiving this year so I will miss it but we are going for Christmas and my mom makes it for that meal too.  I CANNOT WAIT.

I have famous mashed potatoes.. my kids, my step-daughter to be, my sisters, my fiancee, my ex husband and almost anyone else who's eaten them love them.. ravingly.. .. My spaghetti (though not holidayish) rocks too.. and I always make creme wafer cookies made sinfully from butter and whipped creme.. yum.. oh so bad for you with powdered sugar/butter frosting filling, but they are tradition for the holidays. They are always the first cookie to go. My Mom made them for holidays before she died.. now I make them for my family, I love em

It's best after it's set in the fridge for a few hours and the mini marshmallows start to 'fluff' up a bit.

Actually...that's a pretty well known salad! Ambrosia Salad. My family adds coconut to it, which I despise, but basically its the same recipe except instead of Miracle Whip and sour cream I mix mine with a low fat plain yogurt, nix a *few* of the calories. The mini marshmellows are what make it sweet! And it is totally the best after it has sat for a while! We have that at most family holidays on my mom's side.

I'd have to say my favorite Thanksgiving food is the MASHED POTATOES!! I love love love love potatoes. And I agree with everyone else, just a big of gravy and that is seriously my Thanksgiving dinner since I don't like turkey or the other dishes much at all.

Blue824 I have heard of ambrosia salad...I thought that was the stuff you see on salad bars with jello in it!   You know, more fluffy, less fruity.  Your recipe sounds really good, though.  However, I would have to omit the coconut...while I love it, most of my family members don't.

So funny that you don't like the turkey part of Thanksgiving...neither do I!  I have never made one and I don't know if I could touch a turkey carcass, period.  Are you a vegetarian or do you just not like turkey?

Hmm...I've only heard it referred to the same thing you & i were describing, nothing with the jello stuff hehe, I wouldn't like that at all! No, I'm not a vegetarian anymore, I used to be. I barely eat any meat, its mostly because I just don't like meat as opposed to the reasoning I used when I was a true vegetarian when I was younger.

Moo.

I ate WAY too much yesterday, you know that the sad thing about it is I can't wait to get started again today.....

My plate was pretty consistant with all the carbs I don't usually allow myself- mashed taters, cornbread stuffing, and biscuts. Oh yeah and the turkey made an apperance too...

Since we've relocated to the southern part of the state, closer to my parents, we drove back home last night instead of staying the weekend like we used to.

Where are the leftovers? I miss leftovers!!! I could have eaten more of that casserole, those noodles, that stuffing, I didn't even get a piece of pumpkin pie.

Great, now I'm off work today and hungry. They're only an hour away.......

Dressing, dressing and more dressing.

I make 3 huge pans of it. And we will have it for every meal til it's all gone.

And turkey sandwiches - oh yummy.

I'm in distress right now, watching the Texas / Aggie game.  I wanted Texas to walk all over those damn Aggies! It's only the beginning of the half, with Texas ahead, but those freaking Aggies are all riled up and pissed. My daughter goes to Texas and my whole family are Texas fans. My daughter had a dream that Texas lost today's game. Yikes!!!!!!!!!!

Moo is right.

Since we made our own turkey and my Mom made one for the family get together, we have tons of leftovers, TONS.

Since everyone is talking about leftovers, here is a great breakfast recipe for the morning after or the morning after that with your leftovers. We have a whole extra dish of dressing and 6 more cooked potatoes to mash.

We're eating this right now, it's very easy and good. We substituted honey and maple sausage for the italian because that's what we had, and green onions for the bell pepper. The egg on top is the crowning glory as it mixes SO well with the hash. Add salt.

Rave reviews from my taste comittee, aka Greg.

Diane Sawyer's Turkey Hash

• 1 tablespoon of olive oil
• 1 cup of diced red pepper
• 1 cup of diced yellow onion
• 1/2 pound of Italian sausage (sweet or hot) our of the casing
• 1 pound of turkey and shredded turkey
• 2 cups of stuffing
• 1 cup gravy
• 1 tablespoon of olive oil
• 1 tablespoon of butter

In a medium-sized skillet over medium high heat sauté the red pepper and onion in one tablespoon of oil until it begins to turn golden brown, 3-5 minutes. Place into a large bowl. In another skillet sauté the sausage over medium high heat until it browns and is no longer pink. This should take 5-7 minutes. Add this to the large bowl with the peppers and onions.
Add the shredded turkey, the stuffing and enough gravy to moisten the mixture to the sausage. In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat add half of the remaining butter and olive oil. Add half of the turkey mixture and press down with a metal spatula a bit.

When the mixture turns brown on the bottom, start turning the hash until there are lots of crispy bits. This takes 3-5 minutes on each side. The mixture will be loose. Place on a serving platter. Repeat with remaining ingredients. Serve with cranberry sauce on the side and a sunny side up egg on top. Serves 4-6.
