Today I went into a local Seattle store with the gf. We looked at a variety of rings and settings. Had a great times.

My gf is a fan of Princess cut diamonds but I suggested she look at an Asscher cut because it brings a little different sparkle to the table so to speak. Well she liked the Asscher cut as much as the Princess. Both diamonds were about a carat but the Asscher was about $1500 more than the Princess. The Princess was 5.5k and the Asscher was 7k. Is this a normal premium for an Asscher cut?

I will do some relevant searches on these wonderful forums but if anyone has a link to what features I should be looking at for quality Asscher diamond please let me know. Personally I love both cuts however the Asscher is a bit unique and worth paying a premium over IMO.

I was told that the Asscher requires a higher grade in color purity because you can see into a bit better. This sounds plausible. Should I be looking at H rating or higher? Lucky for me my gf doesn't like a huge diamond so I'm only looking for a carat. That size will look just perfect in the settings that she likes.

Thanks for all help any of you provide. This site is a godsend for guys like me who came in knowing nothing about these hard sparkly things.

Regards

HM

An asscher will require you to get a higher clarity rating. Step cut stones like emerald cuts and asschers show inclusions so much better than brilliant diamonds. I would not go below VS2. I also think that you should go a higher in color than you would with other cuts. As for a premium for asschers over princesses, I do not know. Storm will be around to answer all of your asscher questions.

Storm will be along shortly I'm sure, he knows asschers like no one else.  He helped me pick out mine.  Take a look at www.goodoldgold.com  and read about them.  The most impotant thing is the pattern, does it have the mile deep look to it.  They like EC's   are unforgiving as far as clarity is concerned so VS2 is the lowest you should go.  I got a .92 E VS1 from GOG and it is really amazing, it also has a nice spread so it faces up larger.  Numbers are a guideline for us, but with aschers we need pics in order to help you.  I am so glad you found Pricescope, welcome!!!

HI Everyone!
hmurchison- were both the princess and the Asscher you saw the same color and clairty- did both have GIA reports?

There can be a lot of reasons for a $1500 difference between two 1.00 stones.
Non branded Asschers are not intrinsically more expensive than princess cuts.
The branded stones are more money than most similar color/clarity princess cuts.

AS far as clarity- some of my favorite emerald /Asscher cuts are eye clean SI2's- simply because they are so much less than VS's.
Although stepcuts like emeralds and asschers typically show their imperfections easily, there are many eye clean SI2 emerald cuts- they may be tough to find, but the value is there when you do.
Of course some people just want a VS stone, and that's totally understandable.

.... to make it short: if you want a nice 1 carat asscher cut for 5.5k, that should be feasible.

It could be SI clarity, as David says with the only catch that a clean one may take a little searching.  I don't think H would be a problem because the stone is not too large. However, I can't know exactly how much color you can or care to see in a diamond. Inclusions are a less personal matter - every diamond has them differently and that makes the whole difference, unless you can't stand the thought regardless of what can be seen.

Anyway, your budget seems to accommodate G-VS2 as well leaving not much to talk about.

Here's one: LINK  (1.1 cts, G-VS2, $5k)

And SI1 may look like this F-SI1  ( 1 ct, $4.5k)

These two came from the 'In House' search on top of this page (btw. that does not mean in Pricescope's 'house', but in some subscribing sellers' inventory). This is a new database, so there aren't a ton of listings - hence both examples come from the same shop. There should be allot more choices if you care to go this route.

Just a thought

Jazmine.  Thank you. That corroborates what the salesperson stated.  They showed us two diamonds.  Both D rated and both looked great.  The Princess cut looked best with one of the rings with matching channel set diamonds.  My gf though the Verragio Lumino setting was beautiful but a bit chunky.   We looked at a nice thin Scot Kay setting that didn't have many extra diamonds in it.  I looked best with the Asscher.

kaleigh thank you for the warm welcome!  This is such a great time for me.  I'm glad to be amongst fans of jewelry who are so helpful.  I'm glad to be part of the community and will remain.

David.  Both diamonds were as close in size as possible and D rated. They both looked great, a total win/win situation.  I now am beginning to understand the premium for the Asscher.  It'll all depend on my lady.  If she wants the Asscher she'll get the Asscher.  I think both worked very well.

valeria101 -  Yeah I think there are more options than I had originally thought I'd find.  I'm really excited about this. Heck I think finding the right setting is going to be more difficult.

Hi,
"D" Rated means nothing without other info. "Close as possible in size" is another ambigious statement
I hate to be "picy-oon(sp?) but there's a lot of misinformation floating around, and I want to make sure you are not being misled.
For example, there is no "Asscher premium"
