yesterday i tried on a 2.98 antique J VS2 diamond.  it had been reset in a modern setting with a white metal bezel.  it is a 2.98 solitaire and looked stunning on.  however, it appeared to me to have a grey cast.  i'm not really interested in purchasing this ring [big sound of relief from my husband who thought it looked absolutely stunning on me unti he saw the more than $33K price tag].  but out of curiosity, i'll repeat my question:  is a grey tone normal in an antique diamond?

i didn't ask...it was a round though.  i was told it was an antique but i'm not sure how many years old a diamond has to be before its considered an antique....of course, when it comes up out of the ground its already plenty old!!!!  th person i spoke with said he would have wanted to see the girdle on it before it was set in the bezel and seemed to indicate that he wouldn't consider it just because of that reason.

eta:  i should say that the new modern setting has a bezel around the girdle only and the pavilion is open to view but did not appear grey.  it was only from the top looking down that i thought it looked grey.

I don't know what you saw... but it could have been a number of things from some freak optics to color.  'J' means a certain position away from colorless, but the tint can be others than yellow, including brown and gray - if you are lucky. You could have found a gray-tinted J, but they are not any more common in old cuts than in new as far as I know.

Will you be looking for an old cut e-ring after all?

Valeria is right, I have heard of some silver/ grey tinted diamonds, this might be more noticeable in an older cut.

I found this old thread with some of Valeria's useful comments regarding grey tints, thought you might find it interesting reading MZ

thanks for the link; it was a very interesting read. the 2.98 i saw was definitely a grey tone but it was also very sparkly.   i think whoever set the stone in the modern mount did it a disservice.  the diamond looks out of place....if you know what i mean.

my husband and i walked away from this ring having found out something:  he doesn't think a diamond under 3 carats would look good on my finger and i had to agree with him.

no, not going to look for an antique diamond for an e-ring....!  but i can't seem to stop myself from trying things on.....!

Try to research about the  stone origin (where  it was mined) - If you could-  theyre  charts where the color ocurrency  are shown .About colored diamond I recommend you get a report. After  get report , make your businesss  decision .  I SUGGEST YOU LOTS OF CARE....WITH COLORED DIAMOND STONES  they are nowadays a big scammed business even for  scam very seasoned diamantaires....Of course Its  very possible to have a j color in any hue , in my  personal experience, I had lots of experience with  j-brown , j-green , and top lights. BUT I WILL MAKE A SMALL ADVICE :  This kind of stones are quite difficult 4  sale because , in most cases show more than only one hue, they are difficult to sort in a definitive color.... must to have a report to avoid problems  when trade the stone. Remember  must to check if you are not  face to face with a  Top ligh Fancy... commonly  confused with  a touched colored stone. Personally I sold like "J" color 2  very beautiful RBC 1 and quite  more Ct stones  by $ 5.000/each  and they was  ending classified like top light brown pink ( Look like J face up  and pavillion), and they were traded by 17500 /each !!. Some  must be skyrocket high prices , anothers amazing cheap, even less than "Whites".
