I recently had my eg ring ( the diamond was taken from a antique pendant) appraised and the lady who did it said the diamond was an old mine cut, she said it was not nearly as good as the modern cuts. I just want is this true? My diamond is so sparkly and very pretty I get comments about it all the time. Thanks everyone.

Old mine cuts are simply different than the modern RB. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, they are totally two different cuts!! It all depends on what you like. Don't listen to her.

I love the old mine cuts. My grandmother gave me a beautiful 3 stone ring with old mine cuts. It's gorgeous. Most people do appreciate their beauty, just because it's an older cut doesn't mean it's any less beautiful. Enjoy your gorgeous ring and don't give it a second thought. I am also a big fan of OEC's, old european cuts. HTH

Hi, Angel...don't you dare listen to that silly woman! Your post said it all: "It's sparkly and very pretty and gets compliments all the time." I happen to be a HUGE fan of old cut diamonds...mine cuts especially. I'd take one over a modern RB any day of the week! They have a different but lovely way of sparkling, and I love their charm and antiquity. There's a wonderful thread in the "Show Me the Ring" forum entitled: "Show me Your Antique Cuts!" (Sorry I don't know how to do a link) where antique cut fans...and there are a lot of us.... have shown off our treasures. I hope you will add YOUR treasure to the thread...I think they are truly special. widget

Anglel... As long as it is sprarkly and you get complements - you are assured that you have one of the better old mine cuts. Some old mine cuts are great. Some are dogs. Some modern cut RB diamonds are great (about 5% of them) Many are dogs. On a percentage bases I'll bet their were more great old mine cut diamonds than their are RB's today (the mines tended to cut for sparkle). I'll settle for a great diamond any day - no matter what the cut. I'm not interested in a dog of a diamond at all - no matter what the cut (unless I can get it cheap and have it recut). Perry
