Hi everyone! I'm convinced that I scratched my princess cut diamond's table. I (stupidly) used the goofy brush that comes with the liquid cleaner on the top of my diamond. I'm convinced it doesn't sparkle like the day I got it and I'm freaking out. I try to get it in a good light to see if I scratched it with that horrid brush. I know that the general person would never notice, but I do and it's my ring!!!Is there anything that can be done to fix this? I feel like I've now completely defeated the purpose of getting a diamond with excellent polish What should I do?

Did you examine it with a loupe? I would get it cleaned really good and look at it with a loupe to determine if it is really scratched. Then you can go from there.

I would definitely take it to a local jeweler for a good cleaning because I thought I did something like that also and it just turned out to be a film from the cleaning solution on the top of the table. I've noticed some of the jewelry cleaners don't get my diamonds very clean - they almost look worse than before I put them in the jar.

Thanks for calming me! I'll ask our jeweler to clean it and take a look!

It is possible to scratch a diamond, but not with that brush. It takes another diamond. Even then it takes a bit of effort or distinctly bad luck. My guess is that your cleaner isn't working very well. Try windex or a similar product and pay careful attention to the back of the stone. If you're still concerned, take to a jewelry store and have them clean it with their steam cleaner. Clean it with equal parts water and ammonia and rinse with water and a toothbrush, it will sparkle like crazy.

I use 2 parts ammonia and one part water. If you get the ammonia to strong can it hurt the stone or setting?

VG, I doubt it is scratched! Use ammonia and hot water, 1 pt ammonia to 2 pts water, give it a good soak, clean gently and rinse well. If this doesn't help take it to a jeweller and get a professional clean, I am sure it is fine, diamonds are very hard to scratch. I know the panic you feel, but I bet it is fine. If you have any canned air dry it with this too before polishing, it helps prevent water marks.

VG, Neil is right that brush couldn't have scratched your diamond. I would take it to a jewelers and have it steamed. Let us know what you find out. The others have given you great recipes for cleaning solutions that work great too. ____________________________ |
