Woo,  I am looking for a new marquise stone and have a couple of questions.  I am looking at dimisions more than ct. size due to trying to come close to the length of my current stone.  How come I can find a stone listed as .85 ct  11.00mm X 4.78 X2.79 and then find a 1.0ct that is only 8.93x5.71x3.58 in length.  Which is better?  Also, how close in color is G, H and I

The first diamond will be long and skinny. The second short and fat. They are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I would use the length/width ratio to find the marquise you are looking for. Keep in mind that diamonds that are deep may look smaller. Also, examine the girdle thickness to see if the diamnd is carrying its weight in its belly (so to speak). What shape are you looking for? Most people prefer a marquise in the 1.75-2.25 range, in terms of lenght/width. I cannot say which is better as that is a matter of opinion but mine is 1.99, right in the middle.

IMO, the .85 cts will look larger between the two (see below). This is easy with marquises! The long ones look larger to me, until they get way skinny. And... at 3:1 I still love them (this is what I mean) .

You may find it easier torun a search for a certain L/w range. The search engine of Pricescope does not do this, but the 'Advanced search" (or is it 'expert search'?) at WF does.  Just leave a bit of leeway for the depth and table ratios, because these are calculated relative to width and for longer stones the % are higher for the same phisical depth.

About size and weight: these marqs are about 1 carat

  from From here

And the drawing below shows the proportions you mention side by side...

How close are G H and I in color?
Very close in color, but not in price.

You need to go out to see several stones of these colors for yourself and decide if you think better color is worth what it costs.

valerie,  could you place a smaller stone in my ring setting so I could see the difference :)  My stone is a 11.5 X5.5 I2 and I am looking at a better quality stone that is 10.93 X 4.25 SI1.

Thank you !!!

Woo?

Your stone looks lovely in pictures! What aspect of it are you wanting to upgrade? Color? Clarity? Cut?

Does it look different in it's new platinum home?

Just curious! I followed the setting story & am suprised to find you changing the center now!

I LOVE this size and color of my stone!  This stops traffic......hehehehe and the color goes great with my platinum setting.  My old complaint is the visable inclusions on one end.  There is a crystal look with some yellow feathering.  If you take a good look at it you see it but for fast glances it looks FAB.  I just thought maybe I should get a better quality stone with close size.  I happened up on a stone and thought I would look into it.  Silly me

Would this do?

There is something I don't know about the setting and may count: there are two pontoon-like elements on the sides of the marquise. Now the existing center stone fills the gap between them, but a narrower stone might leave a pit there. In the drawing below I extended those sides, but in practice I don't think that would be feasibble without major modification sof the setting because there are baguettes set in them (and even if there weren't).

Hmm... Ana's version looks good but I agree with her that it wouldn't work in reality because she's "cheated" a bit with the side areas. It's too bad you did the setting first if you really wanted to change the stone ... now you're hemmed into specific dimensions if you do want to switch ... Oh sweet hindsight!

I think your stone is lovely in its pix, but I don't have to live with seeing what's bothering you about it.

Maybe you have "ring dysmorphic disorder"? Where you fixate on non-existant flaws! Just kidding ... but I'm starting to think I have "finger dysmorphic disorder" ... after seeing all these slim-fingered gals & staring at my 10+ puppies constantly. Do they do lower finger only liposuction?

I really like the shape of your current MQ. I like shorter, fatter stones (my EC is like this as well). I would suggest leaving your ring as it is and concentrating on a different piece of diamond jewelry, necklace maybe? MQ set east to west...ohhh...

Angie, that is great!!! Here is a better view of the setting.  My stone was actually a little big for the orginal setting...

It may need to overlap the span of the gap underneath a bit so that it covers it.
But the new one could just do the trick too. From the pictures and numbers at hand, it sounds like it just might.

Here's what I am talking about:

from your original post, neither is 'better', they are just different L/W ratios is all!

The proportions look pretty darn different, but these drawings show nothing at all about how brilliant the damonds are, and if allot brighter, the shorther one would win any day. Can you get hold of it  to see what it is like in person?

Wooo, thank you sooooooooooo much for doing that for me.  Lesley has encouraged me to go with the fatter shorter one too.  They have it in stock in their expert section at WF.  I don't know what I am going to do.  Hubby has said I can improve quality for Valentines day but has given me a strict small budget due to the entire reset so we'll see....  THANK YOU ALL

This is just my opinion, but I like your set with the longer, skinnier marquise you currently have.  It looks a bit out of proportion with the fatter marquise, but that's just the way I see it.
