Can you upgrade to a larger center stone if you have a halo? |

What do people think? Could the halo be modified to accomodate a larger center stone at a later point in time or not? Thanks

No expert here, but with any significant increase in stone size, I would have to guess (unfortunately) probably not. I imagine the entire halo and head would have to be removed and remade... then reattached (if that was even possible with the type of ring)... and it would probably be incredibly expensive and not recommended, or even just downright "impossible". But it will be interesting to hear what the experts say. Good question! And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it! |

It depends on how much bigger you would want to go - and how the original diamond was set. With a bezel setting a remake would likely be required in any circumstance. Prong set might allow a bit of room.

My jeweler took my bezel set ring that was made (but I didn't like), removed my 1.5 ct pear stone from it, and kept the setting. Next time I saw her, she was wearing it with a honking pear (a VERY spready 1.67 ct - it looked like 2 ct facing up) prong set above the halo. So...you *might* be able to upgrade if you have a prong set stone, if it's not too much bigger...but if you have a bezel...you might be able to get a bigger stone but prong set it above the halo this time...or else no upgrade in that setting!

I think also part of it is if it's prong set above the halo or into the halo...like how WF has the two settings, one is prong set and one is bezel. Probably be harder to put a bigger stone in a bezel than in a prong set?

Take my new asscher ring for example. The asscher has a thin bezel and then a halo around that. If I were to get a bigger asscher someday, (which I'm not ) the whole ring would have to be taken appart and remade. That's just the case for my ring, not all halo's of course. But I'd have to say it would involve a lot of work and money. HTH.

my now e-ring is a prong set halo; since it was made for my stone, I don't think anything much bigger would fit in the setting. This is just fine with me, since when I get my new ring (in 10-15 yrs!) I will get to keep the old one in its original form too
