Thanks for everyones help, I just need a final bit of advice on my whole situation.

I was referred to a respected jeweler who was going to give me a deal, close friend of a friend, in the business for 23 years. Smaller store than the big ones here in DC so he uses GIA and EGL.

He showed me what he says is his top diamond, wish he had more like it.

Here are the numbers:

1.70, FSI, GEMEX H10/very high, Exelllent Ideal, Hearts and Arrows, platinum band, Tolkowsky Cut.

Shape/Cut: Round Brilliant
Measurements:    7.62 - 7.55 x 4.75

Proportions:

Total Depth:        62.6%
Table Width:        55%
Crown Ht:            15%
Pavillion Dep:        43%
Girdle:                Medium Faceted

Finish:
Polish:                Very Good
Symmetry:          Very Good
Culet:                None

Clarity:                SI1
Graining:              Nil
Color:                   F
Fluorescence:        None

The reservation to me is the certification is EGL-Isreal, cost $14,125.

He fisrt told me it is EGL-NY so I put a $2000 deposit down on my credit card, looked good to me. He later said it is EGL-Isreal, and said EGL-Isreal is stricter than EGL-LA, similar to EGL-NY. I said I would cover the cost to have it GIA certified, but he said its not worth having it looked at twice and it would take 3 -4 weeks, and I am in a time crunch. Sounds strange to me, question is am I getting ripped off and should I trust him, and what can I do especially with the deposit. Any suggestions on dealing with him if I want to chenge my mind. I was assuming it is EGL-NY.....

I can get a similar deal and get GIA certified, but I have already put a deposit down on the EGL-Isreal ring.

Cert number.....2506394837

Help!!!!

Not loving the depth on this stone.  Also don't like how he said it was EGL NY and now says it's EGL Israel.  That would make me nervous.

Of course, the diamond may be lovely, and you may want to go with it.

Separately, I would say that experts on the board say a lot that EGL Israel is soft, leading me to think that your dealer friend is either:

- not knowledgeable
- not truthful

And in either case, your deposit was left with him on the basis of information he gave you that he later made you aware was incorrect.

If you have any hesitation about going forward, I would simply get my deposit back on the basis on the mis-information, and get quite hostile if you want it back, and there is any suggestion he would decline.

I'm in DC, too, and a lot of people read the forums here.  Do make sure you name him sooner or later.

It is quite likely the stone is G SI2 in other labs opinions - but this still looks to be a very nice stone - so if you cant see inclusions in diffuse rather than spot lights, and the stone looks bright white and sparkly - then the choice is yours.
But as you have been advised - everyone knows EGL Israel is soft - I had this conversation with the ex head of EGL USA and the head of EGL israel about 3-4 years ago. It is common knowledge that they made no bones about and led to a rift between EGL USA and EGL in other countries.

Thanks everyone,

Lesson learned.

I cancelled the diamond and also will be getting my deposit back.

From now on only GIA, just my preference after all that.

To other novices, stay away from EGL-Isreal!!!!!  One of my jeweler friends told me he travels to Isreal for diamonds and has seen people pay off EGL-Isreal Gemologists a few hundred dollars to grade a certain way, whether it's true or not, I don't know.....

Nothing wrong with AGS....

A lot more information on the report than GIA.

So suggest you don't restrict yourself to only GIA.
