Would you keep looking for a stone that scores less than 2 or is a score of 2.1 acceptable. Thanks!

everyone likes a definitive. personally, i don't think you can split hairs that close. is a 1.9 better than a 2.0 better than a 2.1? hca is a useful tool and the information it provides is very helpful but you need to look at the whole picture, not just one piece of the puzzle.

thanks for the advice belle! somtimes i find the numbers numbing and then other times i get fixated on every little detail...

Lovelylulu, There's lots of options out there, so unless you're hamstrung for some other reason, why second guess yourself. For that matter, consider staying a bit away from the #2 proper, to increase your chances of having your option under 2 only because of measurement error. Just my 2 cents. Remember, everything's relative. Whatever looks lovely at 2.1 could look that much better under 2. Once seen, leave yourself as the only judge, of course, at which point, you might decide to go with a 2.1 after all. Ira (Ruffles have Ridges) Z. |

If you are using a Sarin or Ogi scan the scan has a small margin of error. Even a tenth of a degree can influence the result so I wouldn't discard a 2.1 out of hand. What are the reported angles? For that matter, are you using crown and pavilion angles or percentages? Angles are best of course. John |

John Q: I would love to be able to have all those answers, but the truth is i just used the pricescope search tool and looked for Excellent round brilliants. then i eased the parameters a bit and searched for Excellent - Very Good. so i'm not sure how the search engine computers those numbers...

Using the angles from the lab document the HCA results in a 2.1 The Sarin report gave it a 61.6% depth and 35.2 CA. Using those numbers the HCA result is a 1.9. On one hand, we rely on the lab document as the 'authority.' On the other hand we have never made a secret of the fact that we believe HCA penalizes steep/deep a bit more than it should. You have an ideal-scope image available to review as well. Since this has turned out to be one of our diamonds I'll leave further comments to others in the interest of objective input. Best, John |

I can't find the Larson cartoon, but I'll explain it. You have a guy up at a blackboard, making notes. People in the audience are watching and commenting: "What is he doing;" three different people in a row ask this. Down at the blackboard, the guy writing is saying to himself "What in the hell am I doing?" (this, intended as self-depreciating humor) Although I have found it helpful to use the HCA as an analytical tool, the author of the tool says that with the idealscope, you hardly need the HCA. The Idealscope image of this one looks pretty good to me, with an untrained eye. Then again, I've also appreciated what Windowshopper has said about it. Jim at DCD may or may not still agree, but he has caved, and uses them now. I get your strategy, of having opened up the options to very good. Nothing much exists in the search by cut category as a close alternative. The Quick search has some you could explore further. Based on time constraints, I'd consider what you're considering. If its fairly priced at a discount from the top cuts then I wouldnt be against it. WF ES is usualy well priced for the quality level. So I guess im saying its a nice diamond for the money but wouldnt be my first pick if the cost wasnt an issue. ........... Karl has joined the diamond trade and is now posting as Karl_K |
