Will GIA certify a diamond if it is poor cut quality. For arguements sake lets use a round 1 carat diamond with the color E and inclusions are si1. The Table %, Depth %, crown angle, and pavilion angle% are all really bad. Would GIA cert a diamond that is cut poorly? Is it possible for EGL to certify a diamond that GIA wouldn't?

Yes it will. Check this one for example:

1.00 D SI1 GIA D=68.1% T=64% THK-VTHK N G G N 5.97X6.07X4.10

uuuugly :)

good news is it's almost 50% back from list.

J, you're misunderstanding what is meant by "certify," and in fact, GIA's official position (which the whole world seems to ignore) is that it does not "certify" anything--it provides reports on diamond quality.

So if you send them the ugliest diamond in the world, they will be happy to sell you a report that proves that, indeed, it is the ugliest diamond in the world.

The GIA does not "certify", but they do grade stones with a subjective system that is very well developed and understood.

They do not tell you if a stone looks good or bad. One must know how to look at a stone or know how to analyze one of their reports in order to know if a stone is ugly or potentially pretty.

Color, clarity, depth, girdle%, table%, pol and sym, do not describe the beauty of any diamond.

Yes, but the cert really says nothing about diamond quality either. I define a cert to be a document of identification. It lists certain key identifiers just like your driver's license lists your height, weight, age, and other distinguishing characteristics. It is the purchaser who attaches the diamond's 'quality' to those distinguishing characteristics according to their own perceptions.

If you are just forming your own perceptions of diamond quality, this bulletin board gives lots of helpful advice. But you'll soon learn there is a wide variety of opinion as to what constitutes a quality diamond. So use the bulletin board as a guide book, but decide for yourself what you like and what you don't like in a diamond. You need not please anybody but yourself.

I was being facetious. Actually, I agree 100% with this, which is why I get so annoyed with Ideal/H&A obsession. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not a cut grade.
