I took my pear ring in to one of those Fast-Fix type jewelry repair places in the mall a few weeks ago to get the size tweaked (and I did it too small so I'll need to go back yet again) and I'm looking at my ring the other day and noticing the metal looks really dark to me. It's 18wg so it's a warmer white metal. At first I didn't notice it at all, then a little later I'm thinking "something's weird about this... I don't remember it this color" and sure enough I noticed the head part is a bit warmer in tone, and the shank is really icy looking, even a bit cooler in color than my 950 plat band (?!). I stayed while the benchman sized it and was casually watching most of what he was doing. Could he have plated it? I realize now I don't even know what the procedure what look like if I saw it. I saw him cut it, use the torch, use some spinning (buffing?) wheel, and then the ultrasonic. There might have been something else before the wheel but I can't remember exactly what that was. But I have no doubt that the band is "cooler" looking. The whole thing took about maybe 20 mins so it would have had to been done then if that's what it was. Any ideas? |

Date: 9/26/2005 4:41:02 PM I guess that's possible. Ask him when you return exactly what he did. If he plated it or if it was the polish he gave it (you mentioned a buffing wheel), he should be able to clear that up for you.Author:sarita I took my pear ring in to one of those Fast-Fix type jewelry repair places in the mall a few weeks ago to get the size tweaked (and I did it too small so I'll need to go back yet again) and I'm looking at my ring the other day and noticing the metal looks really dark to me. I had my 18K WG e-ring sized this weekend. My jeweler had me try it on just to make sure it was the right size, then said it had to be polished and rhodiumed. Before she polished and rhodiumed, there was a noticable yellow tinge at the bottom of the shank where it had been cut to be made smaller. I don't know why, but when it was worked on, it looked "warmer" to me. After the rhodium and polish, it came back nice and shiny and icy white, like it was the day I received it.

it sounds like he DID NOT PLATE IT. He probably is not properly equiped. Find someone who is and have it rhoduium plated. Garry Holloway FGAA DipDT |
