I already know what you ladies will be thinking (the more bling the better! ) but I need some input on this. My girlfriend and I have looked at rings here and there. She is about a size 4 and we both thought that 1 ct in a solitaire setting looked pretty good on her. A 1.25 stone still wasn't too bad, 1.5 MAYBE doable. I thought that somewhere between 1-1.25 would be good, she thought maybe 1.25-1.5 would be good. I am in the process of purchasing a stone from an online vendor. I'm worried that the stone I'm looking at (around 1.25 ct) may look even bigger, too big on her little fingers, than the stones we saw in person. It's ideal cut so I was worried it might look bigger than the rings we looked at in the stores. I don't know what the cut was for the stones we looked at (I know it wasn't bad though). Does anyone have hand shots of similar rings (size 4, 1-1.5 ct)? Thanks ------------------------------ Life's a party. Crash it. |

If your girlfriend thought 1.5ct looked good in the stores, then she's not going to say "Oh dear, this looks too big". Honest.

WC, go to the Show me the Ring folder and click on the eyecandy folder. There are pages of rings with handshots (most are linked to the original post). My ring is a 4.5 but my ring size is probably closer to 4.25. My diamond is a 1.72 Emerald Cut (which I have read looks smaller than a 1.72 RB) I think it does look large on my finger but TOO large no way  I love it. I am sure she will love anything you get her but I think 1.25 is a very nice size in a RB.

Here's a link to my 1.24 ct RB ring. I don't think it looks too big and even a 1.5 carat would have looked great. Diamond shrinkage hasn't set in yet at all, though, and I love putting on the ring on every day. My FI (now husband) had asked me what I would like when we got engaged....0.75 or 1ct. I said 1 ct, he went for "quality" and got a 0.75 with better color, clarity, etc. Although I loved the ring, it wasn't what we had discussed and always felt that that ring was sort of a decision he had made without really considering MY feeling (i.e. why ask if you're just going to do what you want anyways?  )--he was hung up on quality.If you have already discussed a certain carat size and she has stated that that is what she likes, then I would go with that if it isn't going to take food off your table or cause any financial hardship, of course.

Shay has pointed you in the right direction. IMO, 1.25ct will be an excellent choice even if she has small fingers. Big = good! The first time you see a diamond it looks big and then you get used to it. We should start a thread for 1-2 ct diamonds (we have one for under 1ct and over 2 ct but in between no). I have to figure out photos first... Anika

I have a 3.5-3.75 finger, and I think any of those sizes would be fantastic! I know I wouldn't say no!

I wear a size 3.5 - 4 and am hoping for a 1.5-2 for my upgrade I think anywhere between the 1.25 and 1.5 mark would be wonderful and look terrific on her. |

No woman is ever going to think that a diamond is too big. The 1.25 should be a great size.

Thanks for all of your responses, especially those of you with small fingers! I was pretty sure that no one would think the diamond would be too big, I was more concerned with if it would LOOK too big. I feel a lot better about it now.

Date: 9/26/2005 12:52:20 PM i have a fiend with teeny fingers 4 or 5 and her stone is 2carats and I (personally) think it looks ridiculous on her............................................................................I dont agree that no diamond is ever too big. I think unless the purchase is too buy a piece of jewlery to make a statement (i.e a 12 carat emerald cut pink diakond or something) the stone and mounting should fit the wearer's frame and style.

LOL girls with the responses!! I agree, it's a rare occurence when I would think a diamond is TOO BIG!!! I think that a 1.25 or a 1.5c on a size 4 finger is just fine. We even have one or two size 2-3 fingers with 1.5+ rocks on them around here!! Oh and pictures please when it's all said and done! ________________________________ |

Not liking the bigger stones is a rarity.....LOL....My sister has long thin fingers (what I wish I had ), she wears a size 5 and has a GORGEOUS 3 ct RB center stone and 2 1ct stones on either side. Her hands look AMAZING with that honker! So your GF with a 1.25 or a 1.5ct diamond will look just Beautiful! Good Luck

I say that only that from my expereince, unless your looking at a "branded" stone most stones in the stores are less likely to be ideal. If they are shallow then the spread will make the 1.25 look larger than an ideal cut or AGS000 1.25 My GF has a 5 ring size and long thin fingers so a 1ct actually looked really nice on her. Of course larger (to a point) would look great too.

Weddingcrasher, unless your fiancee has really, really SHORT fingers (baby-sized, I mean) it should look fine. SHE has already said the 1.25 - 1.5 is fine (she LIKED even the 1.5... notice?). The stone will look 'smaller' as time goes by... it's called 'shrinkage'! I have a friend with very small fingers who has a 2 ct., and at first it seemed HUGE, but we've all gotten used to it (her husband recently added two sidestones) and it still isn't 'too much'. She's a casual type of woman, too, and the ring just seems to 'fit' her! So if it fits your budget, don't worry about it EVER being too big!

Jr22 has a good point- many of the diamonds you've seen in stores are probably cut to maximize spread, so that they will look as big as possible for their carat size. Of course, I'm a girl so I've GOT to reiterate that there's no way in heck a 1.5 is gonna be too big. If she thought a 1.25-1.5 was a good size, than go with as close to 1.5 as you can!

There's a different perception of what size diamond is "too big" between men and women sometimes. I said I wanted something that wasn't too big, and my then-boyfriend thought I meant around half a carat would be good. I actually meant "nothing larger than a carat" and he was quite shocked when we discussed it further and he found out what I meant, because he had been thinking of one carat as "a honker". It wasn't because he was mean with money, and he happily agreed a budget for a high quality 1 carat stone once we were on the same page about what size I wanted. He just had no clue about what was my taste in "too big" and "too small". I know he's not alone in this, as other men have brought up the same question on this board. 1.5 carats is by no means huge by today's standards in many parts of the US. If that's what all her friends are getting, she will want to show off something that's in the same ballpark. Unless she wants a massive halo style ring with 3-pointer melee stones, 1.25-1.5 will look very nice indeed on a size 4 finger, and will also look pretty with a large variety of wedding bands.

LOL! Good idea!! I always loved my ring, but in the back of my mind, I always thought, you know, this is now what I told him I wanted so why did he even ask. I was thinking of my upgrade immediately instead of at my 10 year anniversary when I actually got it. Always go with what they say if you are going to take the time to ask in the first place, right?

So what did you decide to go with, Wedding_Crasher? I came into the game a little late (I was getting married and then on my honeymoon!), but I agree that 1.25cts will look wonderful. I wear a 4.5, and have a 3+ ct princess that looks just fine on my finger. I think solitaires really help keep the classic look and keep stones from looking "too big" (as others have said, if there is such a thing!). Because 1.25cts is a good size for both of you from what you've said, I was just curious what you chose. Please share!!!

I'm going to go with the 1.25 ct. I could compromise quality and go up to 1.5 but I'd rather have an ideal cut stone. I think (hope) she will be happier with a little smaller, but better stone too.
