I have been trying to learn as much as I possibly can since I learned about PS. I found PS in April and kept the knowledge of it to myself. Well, as our 25th wedding anniversary is approaching in about 5 mo., I introduce my hubby to the fact that buying diamonds and diamond rings just isn't like it was 12 or 13 years ago...it costs more and there is alot more to know b4 you buy so that you buy what you really want for the least amount of $. The problem: my hubby thinks that since I have a ring why do I need an upgrade? He doesn't need a different ring so why do I? My first ring was accidentally lost by our 2 eldest kids playing house back in 1990 and I didn't and couldn't get a replacement--my current ring--until 1992 or 93. The current ring is very nice and it has great value. I have the original paperwork on it and everything still. I went to our local mall to get my eyes and hands on some stones I am particularly interested in: the asscher and the cushion cut. I am especially fond and drawn to the cushion cut, but I had to see the asscher in person as well. I carved out time today especially for this and I was thrilled and highly motivated as well. The jeweler I chose to ask questions to has worked on my current ring when I had some prong issues so I started there. He was superb and not one bit pushy. Highly informative and volunteered helpful facts to me. I LOVE the cushion cut!  The asscher is indeed elegant and makes a presence,but I am not sure its me, but it sure was breathtaking...let's put it this way, I won't say "no" to an asscher! The jeweler informed me of what the approx. trade in value would be on my current stones towards a new ring from his store. I suspected pretty close where he said $ wise the amount would be and I wasn't necessarily disappointed. I paid $500 more than what he was willing to credit me...so that is good...right? Anyways, sorry this is so long, my hubby thinks that since the diamonds are still the excellent quality they were when we bought them, that we should be credited more towards the new purchase. He is seriously out of touch with what even the simplest setting and an exceptional diamond currently cost. I took him to the PS portion showing loose diamond costs and he nearly swallowed his tongue! He left the room saying how insane it was to consider putting that much $ into a new stone! With our anniversary just around the corner, I want this purchase to mark a very special milestone in both OUR lives--25 years of US together...I am not sure what to do...HELP!!!

I'm sorry to hear about your husband being upset about the price of the new rings. I'm no expert on jewelery trade-ups but... Are you going back to the same jeweler you purchased your original ring 12 years ago? I would imagine if it were the same place, they would give you 100% credit...or let you trade it in as long as you are spending twice as much as you spent the first time. Would it be out of the question to get an entirely new cushion cut stone altogether using some of the PS vendors that offer amazing deals? Those local mall stores are so overpriced, you might spend the same amount in the upgrade as you'd spend on a new stone at someplace like Whiteflash or Good Old Gold. Or if your husband isn't willing to spend a lot on a new ring how about getting a cushion cut pendant and keep your ring?

Deanne, What size are you looking for? What kind of diamond do you currently have?
