I am planning on buying a ring from a local jeweler. The diamond does not have a certification (IGI, GIA, etc), however the jeweler had it appraised in the last few days and the diamond comes with an AGA appraisal (I believe that it is from Atlas in Philadelphia). Will this be good enough for insurance purposes? Do I still need to go get my own appraisal? Thanks for the help.

call your insurance company and see exactly what they require.

Dave Atlas tends to appraise based on general internet prices (and I have had my work done by his firm). I tend to trust his appraisials. As this is likely a smaller diamond - I personally would be OK with the valuation. However, one of the services of an appraiser is to ensure that the stone was set right without damage. You might want to have a local independent appraiser verify this - which would save you the shipping charges. Perry
