This probably has been discussed before, but here goes. Sorry to bore anyone! If you had to choose between a smaller carat size in a E to G color or a larger size I or J color what would you do??? I have been looking at different vendors and I know many here LynnB and Demmie have huge new upgrades in I or J, I just can't make up my mind and can only spend so much on this upgrade. I can either get a E to G in the smaller size (under 2 carat mark) or over a 2 to 2.25 in a I to J. This would go in my plat setting that I have now. I look at the amazing K's and amazing F's and everything in between and can't make up my mind. I still have a few months to look, I will probably get this in Dec. or Jan. in time for our 10th annv. I just don't know what to choose. I couldn't tell the difference of a G and J when I looked, so am I better off just going with J or K to get the largest stone possible? This may be last upgrade to cows come home!!!! They ain't coming home is what DH says! I always wanted a 2 carat stone, but deciding on color is hard. Thanks in advance for opinions.

IMO- go J- in a well-cut stone. most bang for your buck, especially if you love size!!

In rounds, cut can't help but make a diff. on how the color "faces up". If you care to share your budget I'm sure some folks would suss out some options for ya ... If you only want to know what we'd pick in the options you describe. Me: over 2ct ideal cut I or J sI1 or 2 (or... sneaky me, I might get someting a dash under two that has the MM, face up of a 2ct to save some dough or get the best cut I could afford -- and then lie my ass off to anyone that asked, that it was a 2ct)

I'm a cut and size wh*re so I myself would pick the largest ideal cut stone I could afford, even if it were an I or J. For me, the only colors I am sensitive to are the rainbows that come off an ideal cut stone!
My favorite color is sparkle!!! |

Deco- yeah love that idea! I am starting from scratch since I did not buy from any vendor so I don't want to go over 22k. If it was a exceptional stone then I would go over some but not a lot. I was looking at some 1.59 F's for 14 to 16k and a 1.7 G and a 1.8 E for 18k. I don;t know. I can get the largest J or K. I am worried that I may get shrinkage syndrome and want to upgrade down the road and maybe I should go with the J or K. I hear so many talk about color, but I honestly could not tell the G from J face up. **************************** Adopt a pet and save a life. |

I'm going through the exact dilemma, only I still have 5 years till my 2+ carat upgrade. I personally am going with a very good to ideal cut (not necessarily H&A, because I personally can't see the fricken difference (I compared my mom's G color 60/60 stone to my SIL's G color H&A under all kinds of different lighting)! I have another H color rb from my mom which is FAR from ideal 65% table, and 58% depth), but the slight warmth doesn't bother me in the least, which makes me believe I could go as far as and "I" in a better cut. This is HUGE since I proclaimed myself as a color snob (current ring is an E). I personally would not go as low as a "J", but I've yet to see one in person, so you never know. Lastly, the older you get, the worse your vision, so I figure by our 10th anniversary, I'd be close to 40, and wouldn't see the little imperfections of an SI2, and no one would examine my ring in detail other than myself! |

Lori, you left out H! I say go for an H color, SI clarity (eye clean) and then go as big as you can.

Hi! I would take the smaller E to G because I have a keen eye for color.
