for me it was the immaculate reception  by Franco Harris of the Steelers in the 1972 playoff vs the Raiders.i still think the catch was illegal.i was in shock b/c i was a big Raiders fan. i know,i know most you weren't even born in 72 
it is always harder to find a "mind clean" stone than a eye clean stone. |

The game where Joe schooled Young and lead the Chiefs to a victory over the niners. YYYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAA!! I still have that game on tape around here somewhere revenge is sweet. When Joe retired I lost interest in football and havent watched a whole game since. What they play today I dont even consider to be real football. ........... Since I'm a Chicago Bears fan, of course my favorite moment is from their Super Bowl season of '85-86. It was NFC Championship game against the LA Rams. It was freezing outside and the Bears were kicking their butt. It was late in the game and LA was desperate to put some points on the board. This is what happened from www.bearshistory.com: "As QB Dieter Brock dropped back to pass, he was sacked by Richard Dent, and fumbled the ball. Just as Wilbur Marshall picked up the ball and ran in for a touchdown, it started to snow. Many surmised it was George Halas giving his mark of approval on the team." I can remember that moment when it was snowing. Marshall was running to the end zone with him arms extended up in the air. I was in 8th grade at the time watching the game with my family (we had a big party that day for it). It was really incredible and was the moment we knew we were going to win the Super Bowl that year. The Super Bowl itself was kind of anticlimatic, but still a good game.

DF, that was a legal catch  Imust have seen that thing a thousand times on replay and even with insatnt replay they could not have overturned the call. What a miracle play though.Shay, no need to explain "the catch" I'm sure Denise can (hee, hee)

Red Right 38.  Any Browns fans out there? If you live or lived anywhere near Cleveland you'll remember the biggest heartbreaker in Browns history was the 1980 playoff game against the Broncos when the Browns were this close (thumb and forefinger almost touching) to going to the Super Bowl, and the infamous "Red Right 38" play was called. The ball was intercepted, the Broncos won the game (and the Super Bowl that year) and 70,000 freezing fans in Cleveland stadium collectively sobbed into their beer.

Shay, I guess "The Drop" is just as tramatic for you as "the catch" especially being in the Super Bowl. Denise can tell us all about it! For the Buffalo fans "wide right" was the killer. Since Buffalo is my least favorite team, I really enjoyed that moment.

If we are speaking of the Leon Lett drop against the Bills, my Aunt made me a shirt to commemorate the event. It said Loveable Leon Lett-down. Go Cowboys! That one didn't bother me as much as the one against Miami with the snow on the ground at Texas Stadium on Thanksgiving Day when he touched the ball after a blocked field goal attempt. My DH is a MIAMI fan. We did not know each other then, but he still gives me a hard time about that one. If I chose the wrong drop, (so many Super Bowls for my team) please let me know. At least with Leon's drop the Cowboys still won the Superbowl. The Miami game wasn't that important. "The drop" was in Superbowl XXIII against the Steelers. The score was 21-14 and Jackie Smith dropped a sure catch in the end zone that would have tied the game. The Steelers won the game 35-31. Last year in a pregame show after the Seahawks lost to the Rams, Bobby Engram was given the "Jackie Smith All Hands Award" for dropping the ball in the endzone for the touchdown that could have won the game. In that same segment, Nate Kaeding was given the "Scott Norwood All Kicker Award" for missing a 40 yard field goal "wide right" that would have won the game. In memory of Scott Norwood's missed filed goal that would have given Buffalo a win in Superbowl XXV.

Yup, the drop was bad. "The catch" nearly killed me. Charlie Waters and D.D. Lewis were retiring, and I wanted them to have one more Super Bowl ring. I cried for hours and hours after that game. A couple of years ago: Bret Farve's father dies the day before a Packer game (road trip). I think this was at San Diago (and Bret is really close to his father): No one who watched the first half of that game will ever forget: Bret Farve passed for something like 400 yards in the first half alone, lots of touchdowns, no inteceptions, virtually no incompletions, etc. If I remember right - I believe that in the first half Bret had a perfect quarter back rating. Totally amazing (Bret left shortly into the second half - which did include a missed pass that brought his QB rating down from perfect). The next day the local newspaper sports section ran a severall inch headline (remember - this is the competitors local newspaper) of "A Son Honors His Father" - or something close - and wrote up a half page article on what a game that Bret had and what it meant. Yes, they did have a couple paragraphs at the end describing that their local team provided a backdrop for one of the best - if not the best - professional performances of all time; this dispite the fact that this was not just a game that the Packers won - the Packers totally dominated the game and the final score was very lopsided. You can all talk about great individual plays - and there are lots of them to discuss: But here is an example where one player had a truely amazing half of a game - that lifted up all his teamates to an equally amazing performance - and totally dominated the oponents - and the oponents fans - in a way and in a situation that even they understood that this was more - much more - than a football game. My memory is also that virtually the entire opposing team - to a man - thanked and consoled Bret Farve after the game (a lot more than the typicall handshake and simple comment). That is my "best" football memory. The entire first half was one big play. I do not believe that there will ever be another like it. Perry

Being a Bears fan (Redskins by marriage), I'm afraid I don't have many favorite moments. I was too young to appreciate the 85-86 season, so my favorite football moments are from other teams, I'm afraid. 1. Mike Vanderjagt kicking two of the most insane field goals I've seen in a game against Denver in 2002--one in overtime to win the game for Indianapolis. They were both over 50 yards, it was snowing, and the wind was highly unfavorable. So freaking incredible... 2. It's not an all-the-time sort of thing, but there are two players who I just love to watch because they do such incredible stuff (when they turn it on--no necessarily an all-the-time kind of thing): Michael Vick and Darren Sproles. Amazing athletic feats from those two guys... This thread is great! Keep the memories coming...

Okay so techincally not an NFL moment but did ya'll see that catch in last weeks Alabama VS Southern Mississippi game? Story here. There are pictures too....I mean come on how often does someone catch the ball without seeing it? with his hands around another mans waist? and keep possesion?
