I've been a lurker since about January, with the occasional comment on a few posts titled by others - but I guess its time to officially post my story and join this group.  Boyfriend and I have been together nearly a year and a half.  I'm 32 and he is 35.  Neither of us have ever thought about marriage with anyone else, so it is still a "new" concept for both of us to "actually share the remainder of your life with someone else".  But, it just "feels right", so we want to.  I've never even lived with a past boyfriend as I am very protective of my personal space.  I've always said that I would need to be engaged in order to share that kind of "closeness".  I never thought that he would be ready this soon, but it appears the time has come.  We went looking at settings for the first time over the weekend and I gave me roommate a 30 day notice to vacate.  It's very exciting, and I'm very happy, but it is also VERY SCARY!!!  Has anyone else felt that way?  The actual proposal will most likely take place in November or possibly December (I've told him NOT to do it while Mercury is in retrograde), depending on when the ring can be done.  So, we're not "officially" engaged yet, but we've decided on a September wedding on the Big Island of Hawaii.  He's already told his folks, but I refuse to tell mine until the ring is on my finger ...

Combine 1 stick melted butter and 2 cups graham cracker crumbs. Press in greased 9x13 pan. On top, layer 1 package chocolate chips, 1 package peanut butter chips, 1 12oz can lightly salted peanuts. Top with 1 small can sweetened condensed milk (I use fat free big deal!). Bake at 350 for 25 minutes (the edges should be bubbly). I recommend not cutting them until the next day because it seems to take that long for the graham cracker bottom to really harden.

What does that mean while Mercury is in retrograde? Are you speaking in code? Or are you really following the astrological signs?

Hey LAjen! Thanks for sharing your story and finally posting!

Congrats on the big step you two are taking. I agree with not telling your parents until the ring is on your finger. I feel the same way. My boyfriend, Sam and I have picked out our diamond and setting. The ring is being made...or maybe it's done, but I don't know. Anywho, we're not planning to tell our parents about the wedding until we are engaged.

Don't forget to keep us updated on the progress of your ring! Why don't you describe it to us now?

LA-

I don't blame you for being kind of scared of moving in with a BF. I told mine that I don't want to live together unless we were 'official'. I've seen too many friends become essentially a roommate with benefits- she was waiting for the ring, thinking it was leading to marriage, he was fine with how things were and most of the time it would lead to a lot of resentment. My BF really would like to live together when I move to NY(hopefully soon) but I told him no if we aren't engaged. I'm not saying that it won't work out for you, don't get me wrong, but I cherish having my own space as well since I'm kind of a neat freak. BF is kind of a slob and he has cats. I certainly don't blame you for not wanting anything important to happen while in retrograde either!

LAJ:

Thanks for sharing, and congrats!  I too have been a longtime lurker, and am a noobie poster.

I too feel the same way as you.  I've always been very independent, and love my own space.  It's kinda cool that I'm now ready to share that space & more with the man I love.  It's scary, but cool.  We've been dating since June '04, and the "M" word popped up earlier this summer. And yes, it's the first time that both of us have ever imagined being with the other person for the rest of our lives.  I'm ready ('bout time, I just turned 34!)

Anyway, we went on our first e-ring shopping trip last weekend, just to check it out and figure out what I want (I had an idea, and now I know for sure!) We're shooting for a Holiday engagement, but we'll see.  I'm the one doing all the research, and he'll jump in and take it over when the time is right.

BTW, where in L.A are you?  I'm a South Bay grrl!

Thanks for the welcome, guys!  Chargergrrl, you and I have nearly identical stories - we even went ring shopping on the same days.  Oh, and to answer your question, I'm in Hollywood.
