Well, most of you know I am DYING for a pair of studs - 3-prong, martini-style.  White gold or platinum.  I actually stopped into the mall jewelry store today to try on some for size comparisons.  Apparently, I don't have very big ear lobes and I was surprised at how NICE (and actually big-looking!) the .25s  were!  Now, the .50's looked even better, of course    -- but those littler ones weren't anything to sneeze at!  I can only imagine them in ideal-cut H&A's...   *oh, swoon!*

ANYWAY... I am gathering information and looking around now.  I am in no hurry and my only "deadline" is this dang bee in my bonnet!

So, my questions are these -- are all martini 3-prongs created equal?!  In other words, do all vendors carry essentially the same thing??!  Or are there differences (even small ones) in the "style" - and if so, what are they?  What should I look for?  Any information/advice is greatly appreciated!

And what about the backs?  What are my choices?  What do you recommend, and why?

Also, if anyone has close-up photos, clearly showing the style of the actual setting  - please feel free to post!

THANK YOU!

Lynn

And THAT'S my story and I'm sticking to it!

Oh good for you!!!!  As far as backs are concerned I wouldn't get crew backs they are a pain.  I would get large clutch backs.

I gave my GF a pair of 27 pointers for V-Day.  She also has small lobes so they look fine to me.  The studs were custom made by a local designer in platinum.  The diamonds are G VS1 ideal cut H&As.  The designer recommended regular friction back.  There was a pair of studs posted here that I didn't like.  They had the circle connecting the 3 prongs too low which made the prongs looked too long.  But for such small settings, I guess it really doesn't matter.

I have .38's and love them..they are great for daily wear! But I wouldn't throw a pair of .25's back either!! Love the 3 prong martini. A must have!

How long should the studs be?  On my GF, the studs almost touch her neck.  I meant to ask her if she wanted to have them shorten but I always forget to.

Mara,

Are there any photos anywhere around here on PS of you and your studs?    (heehee, just realized how FUNNY that sounds...  )

I am still wondering if all martini settings are the same.  Anyone?

THANK YOU!

Lynn, I hope Jennifer will chime in as she loves hers.  I don't know the answer, I would think they are all pretty similar.  I would want them in a low basket as possible.  HTH.

I put them somewhere.

I think in that 3 stone thread. Lemme see if I can find it. I never really got a great shot of the settings though.

I have a pair that I bought from Signed Pieces but they are set in a 4 prong basket very low setting.  Now I think I will go ahead and have them set in a martini setting in WG.  Right now they are in a platinum setting.  Mine are 1.50 TCW H VVS2.

Lynn, I think .25 is the perfect size to wear every day!! :D Esp H&A stones... I want some too!!! For the backs, I definitely recommend against screwbacks! I have a pair of .25 TW, bezel set, that I wear in my second earring hole. They're tiny, but really cute and a pretty good cut (of course I checked them with the idealscope!!), I got them from mondera.com. They were fairly inexpensive but good quality, and I really like them. However, the screwback posts are so thick that it HURT to put them on, and I never take them off because for one they take forever to put on and take off, and also because the posts are so much bigger that my holes start to close up if I take them out! They're supposed to be more secure, but they don't feel any more secure to me than my regular friction back earrings. I love my studs, but I'll never buy a screwback pair again!!

Lynn, I actually built a set - one diamond from Whiteflash, one from Wink.  I had Whiteflash set them in 3-prong WG martini settings like Josh posted above, and did heavy friction push-backs.  They really look like they are just floating on the ear.  (sorry for the big picture - couldn't size it for some reason!?)

This is .55/.57 look.

OK... I am getting so psyched about this.  But. I. Must. Remember. I. Am. Only. Gathering. Information...

Alj and Mara -- THANK YOU!  GREAT PHOTOS!  Thankyouthankyouthankyou!!!

Alj, yours are huge!  And so beautiful!  How long have you had them?  They look wonderful!

And Mara, awwwww shucks... you shouldn't have... but I'm so glad you did!    Yours are gorgeous, too... and on your cute little elf ears they look as big as Alj's!  They really do!

So, it LOOOOOKS to me like the earring "point" actually kinda goes "into" the hole somewhat?  To give that beautiful "floating on the ear" look.  Is that at all uncomfortable?  Do you notice that?

Does anyone have any photos of them, not quite spot on -- but from an angle, or even more from the back?  To give an idea of that view - and how far they actually sit out from the ear?!  (I know, I know... I am really REACHING NOW, huh?!!!  )   Pretty, pretty please... with an perfect ACA melee on top??!!!

Lynn

Okay appreantly earing shots are not something one can do without help. From the back they seem the same to me as the front. I dont find the basket in my ear to be uncomfertable. I wore them today without any issues. If I can stop getting odd perpectives of my inner ear I will post some pictures. (Oh the tcw for my martini studs is 2.08...one is just a tiny bit larger then the other).

Hah I don't know about those 'behind' shots, the ear ones were hard enough.

Seriously, I don't know if the point goes into the hole or not, they seem to just sit right on my ear. When I touch them it's like the the back is touching my ear. It's not uncomfortable at all...I have never once even felt them on my ears.

Mine do look pretty big on my ears I guess...it looks like I have a 'shorter' lobe maybe?

I didn't like my 4 prong baskets, they drooped and were irritating. These 3 prongers are my absolute fave. My next stop is going to be ~.60's...someday very soon!

I am still having a hard time picturing how that much "metal" just disappears on the ear!!!  You would THINK that they have to "stick out" more than they apparently do.

Lynn, here are a few pictures of my earrings. I don't know how to make a collage, so I have to attach them individually. Quest Manufacturing sourced the stones (.41 and .42, H SI2, H&A) and made the 14k white gold setting with the La Pousette backs. I had asked them to try to make the setting thinner. They look great in my ears (no pics though).

And the last. They sit almost perfectly flush in my ear, with no drooping. Of course, the stones are smaller, so perhaps larger ones would be more problemmatic.

ETA:  oops, duplicate post.  will post the other one when i get home.  it shows the setting.

My experience with WF was perfect. Their martini setting is perfect IMO--not too bulky yet prongs are secure...sit beautifully on the ear. I chose 14K WG--not worth it for me personally in platinum for an earring.

I think the Expert Selection pre-fab studs in the 1ct or 1.5 ct tdw range would be just incredible for you. Their pricing is great and the stones are SI, I, Ideal cut... I was going to go this route until I pigged out and just got the 1 ct ea ones...but the 1.5 ct pre-fab WF studs area fabulous deal.

I also chose heavy pushbacks-I cannot deal with screw backs AT ALL.
