Well, the upgrade process has officially begun. I'm going to look at 3 diamonds tomorrow ranging in size from 2.02 ct to 2.09. The biggest spread is 8.22 mm. My question is: will this be a big enough jump from my 1.53 (7.49mm)? I guess the only way to really know is to see and compare, but I'm a little concerned it won't be a big enough difference. Lynn's 2.37 has totally warped my senses. All the stones are ideal cut. Two are I color stones and the other is a G. Two are SI1 and the other is VS2. My perspective is totally skewed after hanging out here too long. A 2 ct diamond is huge in the real world, and yet here, it seems to be merely average. Can't wait till tomorrow!!!

My feeling is...it will be definitely big enough...but for how long?   There should be a very noticeable difference between the 1.5 ct and the 2 ct...enough by comparing it side by side against your 1.5 ct stone that you'll want the 2 ct...but how long before shrinkage sets in...that's another story!!!

Seriously, I guess you will just have to see tomorrow.

It is ironic that here on PS a 2 carat is somewhat "average" or at least not that uncommon.  However, in the real world, there are dozens of people who look at my 1.30 RB and make a comment about the "huge rock" on my hand...But still, that doesn't stop diamond shrinkage, and if I could, I would certainly upgrade to a 2 carat (hell, I'll take your 1.50 ;) hehe).

I know, I know...to hell with shrinkage. In reality, though, I don't want my stone to be so big that it either looks fake or obnoxious or both. There is such a thing as too big. Where do you draw the line?

I certainly wouldn't draw the line at 2 carats...  But I guess it depends on the person.  The way I dress (often casual, jeans, etc.) I'm sure people already think it's fake LOL.  But at work (I work in a court house where I see all types of people), I have never had a person ask me if it is real/fake.  The typical response is "WOW, look at that rock!"  But what is in their head is another thing!!

I think where the line is drawn is different for each person.  For example, I just upgraded to a 1.04ct ideal rb (6.6mm) but I also have a 1.5ct rb that was my MIL's.  The 1.5ct is 7.0mm - very deep for that weight stone.  To me, this is the perfect size, and I personally would not like something 8mm or bigger (my husband should be very thankful)  However, one of my friends has a 2ct that she thinks is too small.

Do you have a "final" goal in mind as far as where you want to be size-wise?  For me personally, it was the 1ct ideal cut.  Sure, it doesn't look that big anymore but I'm still happy with its size.

I'd try to hold off and get something bigger

I have a 1.25 princess (on the shallow side, with big table, purchased before PS of course), which easily looks the same size as my 1.5 round (a stone my mom gave me with 60/60 proportions). I don't think of the stone my mom gave me as an upgrade because there is little size difference. Even a 2 ct rounds doesn't look like a huge difference next to my gargantuan-lookiung princess....so I'm looking at a 2.3-2.5 ct. for my next upgrade.

Well, now that I have seen how a 2 ct looks next to my 1.5, I can definitely say that I need to go a little bit bigger. 2 of the 3 stones were beautiful, one of them not so much. The good news is, my jeweler located a stone that sounds very promising. It's from the same company that cut my current stone. It should be here tomorrow or Friday.

Here are the specs:

AGS Ideal Cut, H & A
Weight: 2.353 ct
Measurements: 8.66 x 8.72 x 5.20
Color: I
Clarity: VS2
Depth: 59.8% (I was worried this might be a little shallow, but my jeweler wasn't concerned)
Table: 56%
Pavilion angle: 40.6
Crown angle: 33.8
Girdle: Thin to Medium
Flourescence: Negligible

Any thoughts? I'm assuming this stone will look much bigger, right? Can't wait to see it. I hope it's beautiful -- everything about it, including the price, seems right on. And I just love the size.

Demelza,

WOW! Already started on the process. I can't help you with the diamond search but I think that 2.5 RB is where I draw the line for my hands at least, I have 4.25 fingers. I saw a 3-4 carat on a more mature lady and it looked wonderful, perfect for her. Go with whatever size gives you the "what a ROCK!" feeling. And post pics so that others can live vicariously through you

Dem, you'll have to come back and tell us how the 2.3 worked out for you!
