Cushion Cuts: Edsel? |

I was reading info on another Diamond site (DCI) and saw the Cushion cut referred to as an Edsel, or second class cut. Futhermore, the expert at that site does not seem to think that there is much difference between a modern cushion and the old fashioned cut. He just seems to dismiss them. I am just curious if this is conventional diamond wisdom, or a subjective dismissal of the cushion cut.

I believe it's just one person's opinion. Harry Winston and Cartier are showing lots of cushion cuts these days, and nobody could ever accuse them of selling "Edsels". Maybe the person at the other site had only seen badly cut cushions.

Fred Cuellar is not well respected here. Do a search and read all about him.

Freddy! I just love Freddy! NOT. #1 A lot of people really value the look of the antique cuts. So they have value in that regard and some can look really beautiful .... #2... the modern cushions, which I like, are cut with amazing symmetry (and polish) and they look nothing like their antique counterparts. DBOF says that they have longer and thinner facet patters....you can bet on paying a premium for the superb cut...if you like the look. Regardless of Fred's (DCI) past history, and issues with self promotion, why would he categorically "diss" cushions? He could try to sell this shape/cut too, but he apparently has disdain for the cut...What would his motive be?

He could be uninformed. He could favor one shape over another. He could be marketing certain shapes over others. I'm still waiting to see that magical 65 depth and 65 princess he keeps talking about too...
