I am having some major upgrade fantasies right now. It's always in the back of my mind, but I'm feeling more and more like making my fantasies a reality. I currently have an ideal cut 1.53, G, VS2 RB. It's a gorgeous stone and I absolutely love it. I wish I could give it steroids to make it grow. The problem is, I don't think jumping up to a 2 ct would really be worth it. Yes, it would be bigger, but would it really be enough of a difference to make it worthwhile? I think a 2.25 to 2.50 ct would be perfect and I honestly don't think I would need to go any bigger. To make that kind of jump, though, we're talking at least an additional 15K, right? I don't know if I can justify spending that kind of money. We're wanting to do some remodelling in our new house and getting a new diamond really should not be a priority. Then I wonder, why am I feeling the need for an upgrade now? Is it just about loving diamonds? Is it because we just moved to Canada and I'm needing a distraction from feeling displaced and a little lonely? I just don't know. Maybe I should blame this on Lynn We have almost the same setting and seeing her huge diamond is just too tempting. I keep thinking, that's what mine would look like!! I know that I'm never going to stop wanting a bigger diamond...ever. So perhaps now is the time to do it before prices go up even more...and before we have kids. What do you guys think???

I think... it should be a joint decision between you and your hubby, if you can afford it then go for it, if not wait, start looking at diamonds and see if you find one you love, definitely do it before you have kids... if you love your stone cherish it and realize that most people in the world have diamonds smaller than a carat.

I definitely realize that I am beyond lucky to have such a gorgeous, large stone. But, unfortunately, I want bigger. I feel a bit greedy, but I just love diamonds. My husband would be fine with me upgrading. So, it's really up to me.

Have you tried on a stone of this size? You should before you swoon for it because you might hate it!

I sway on my desire to go a little larger. But the largest that I felt looked good on my hand was about 1.25 or so. A jump but nothing astronomical. Also not insanely high priced, assuming I trade this in. Im not really in a hurry to upgrade anything though we talk about it here and there.

Hehehehe. Welcome to my world :) I too have the same issues. I'm like "what are you doing, there are other important things to worry about"...but it's THIS PLACE!!! This terrible terribvle place

Is there any way you would do an H and wait to get a really good Si2? If you lower the color and clarity...My problem is that now that I have a good color stone, I'm "mind" spoiled....I would love to be able to do a nice big fat juicy H... I'm currently looking for a F or G....

I'm the kind of gal where it's all about the e-ring. I don't collect much of anything. It really gives me such great joy and pride. Even when I'm gross and fat and look like a rolled out of bed, my e-ring says it all...You look fabulous dahling!!! :)

p.s. I think that after you have kids, everything changes...the diamond will be on the END of the list. We can't let that happen :)

I could easily do an H. I'm not very color sensitive. But I don't know about lowering the clarity.

MMM -- I know what you mean about being all about the e-ring. There aren't many things I like to spend money on. I like antiques and jewelry. I go through phases with clothing, but nothing very expensive. I don't really care about earrings or necklaces or bracelets -- I just want one really big, beautiful diamond. And it's really not about what other people think -- in fact, I sometimes feel embarassed or imposed upon when someone notices my ring. It's really about me and how much fun it is to sit on the couch and gaze into my stone. I love going out in different lighting situations to see how my diamond will reflect and play with the light. It's like an endlessly fun toy. Where are you in the upgrade process?

Demelza,

Well...first of all, welcome to Canada . As a Canadian girl (from Montreal, Quebec), I hope you don't feel displaced for too long. As for the upgrade....well typically I've found that diamonds in Canada are not that large. I've never seen a 1 carat before, so a 1.5 is huge...and a 2.25-2.5 well...it must be a MAMMOTH! If you enjoy it, and can afford it then I would definitely GO FOR IT! I think it's perfect justification if you are sure that you will be happy with that size. A 2.5 carat is my dream too, but as my sister said, "It's good to know what you want even though you are never going to get it "

hehehehe. I've realized that when anyone here wants a bigger stone, everyone says do it do it do it LOL...
I think you're already in the process..you just don't know it ;)

I emailed Mark a stone I love. it's a rb too... but I might want a cuhsion. They are slim pickins. You rb gals are spoiled. There are so many beauties out there to chose from!

I sm the SAME way! I like furniture but I'm done with that. I have very few pieces of jewelry. I'm looking for some modest hoops but that's it. I have a pendant. A good watch, maybe 3 or 4 handbags, etc. Nothing crazy. I'd rather have that one awesome ring!

I still need to convince hubby. We had a HUGE fight on friday...the worst we have ever had since we started dating...so I'm not really counting my chickens at this point

How does your husband feel about it.

And there absolutelty are awesome Si1s out there....you'll never see the inclusions. Lucks Si2s too!

Welcome to Canada Demelza! Which province did you move to? Don't worry, you will start to meet new people soon and I'll bet you'll still want that upgrade too!

allycat -- Thanks for the welcome. I'm in Vancouver. So far, we're very happy. For one thing, we're much more closely alligned politically to Canada than the US. And Vancouver is a lovely city and still relatively close to home (California). My husband has dual citizenship (US and Canada), but I only have US citizenship. Assuming all goes as planned, I should have permanent residency within the next year. But until then, I feel a bit like an outsider. I can live here as a visitor for as long as I like, but I don't have any legal status. Kind of unnerving.

MMM -- sorry to hear about the fight with your husband. My husband seems to be okay with it. He's known for a long time that when it comes to diamonds, I live in my own little world. I think it's inevitable that it will happen one of these days. I just wonder whether this is the right time. Will it ever seem like the right time to shell out that kind of money?

haha don't joke mmm!!

dem...i definitely suggest lowering color and clarity to get more size...it's sometimes the only way for us size and cut girls. my sweet spot is H SI2 but i really love my J SI2 and plan to stick with that combo when i upgrade next. my plan is around 2.25-2.40c sometime next year and to be honest after that it's probably it for a while...the price jump from what i have now to the 2.25c is not out of this world, but from that to a 3c or so is basically almost double the entire value of the stone, and like you, we have other priorities where spending 10k plus on a biggerdiamondformara is not included.

that said..i think PS really skews how we view our diamonds. when i am on PS....i am always thinking about when i get my bigger stone or drooling over bigger stone pictures or daydreaming about inventory, etc. but when i am offline and out in the real world, more often than not i am struck by how blingy my set really is and how nice my 1.6c looks on my hand, etc. and the compliments help too.

however i do want that bigger stone so i feel your pain, and can only suggest that if you really want it and don't want to spend $15k then to drop that color and clarity and start loving the slightly warmer tones...and get an SI that is eye-clean, they are definitely out there.

and yes miss bigdiamondLYNN is a bad bad influence! i think she needs a spanking!

well...a 2.50ct is about 8.80 mm. nothing is more important than diamonds. go for it!!!

it is always harder to find a "mind clean" stone than a eye clean stone.

Mara -- I totally agree about PS skewing one's perspective. I'm often surprised when someone comments on how "huge" my diamond is. To me, it's not small, but it's certainly not noticeably large. As I write this, I am aware of how frivolous all this might seem to an outsider (i.e. non-PSer). But, to me, it's one of the great joys in life. So, I think the next step is to contact my jeweler and tell her I'm interested in upgrading and see if she can bring in some stones in a range of color and clarity grades. How low I can go remains to be seen.

MMM -- How long have you been wanting to upgrade? Would you need to change your setting if you got a round?

Hey Demelza,

I've never been to Vancouver, but I assume it is much more aligned with the US. Quebec is very far off in terms of political/social views in the US (plus it's totally french), so I think you are in an amazing part of Canada. As for permenent residency, and you'll get through it. Canada is happy to have you .

Diamond wise, your 1.5 is huge! Especially for Canada standards, but it is so much more important what you are happy with. If you want more bling, then get more bling. As long as you post the pics on pricescope so we can drool! Good luck with your upgrade search.

Hehehehe. I've wanted to upgrade since I got my stone. I've always known that I won't be happy until I have something that is really really big to me on my big hand. It's not like my cushion is small at all...but it looks round when set so why not get a round I ask myself..I have a 2.14 E Vs2 now so I could do a G Si1 round and not spend TOO much more and still get a huge ring. I dunno. i think it's on serious hold now...we shall see...

I hope you get yours!

Update: Well, I spoke to my jeweler today. We agreed that she would look for ideal cuts between 1.95 and 2.4 ct, G-I, VS2- SI1. She said she might be able to have some stones in by Wednesday!!! That would be too exciting. I'm doubtful that a 2 ct would be a big enough jump in size to be worth it, but I also don't think I'd be comfortable going too much larger than 2.25. We'll see what kind of prices she comes up with. Gosh, I'm all giddy even thinking about it. I'm already thinking about the pain of having to part with my ring in order to have the new head put in. Getting a little ahead of myself, I know. I'll keep you posted!
