Just back from a cycle ride from Tucson to the BMW National Rally in Ohio and then onward to Philadelphia.  During the trip I decided to observe what people in this rather upscale market of biking see fit to wear in the way of jewelry.

The typical impression most folks have of bikers runs in the black leather, chains and Harley look, but BMW riders are a different mix, to an extent.  The women wear lots of earrings, many with diamonds.  Close to the ear, not hanging , as helmets get in the way.  Bracelets are very common along with necklaces.  Lots of colored gemstones in these, fewer with main diamonds.  This is a casual event.  Many camp out, but I sure do love a good shower, a large bed and air conditioning.  Most attendees find motels or use huge RVs.  The average age of members in the BMW MC Owners of America is 53, so it is an audience with some financial flexibility.

Men seem to stick mostly to rings and neck chains.  The guys tend to look more like outlaws than the lady's looking like biker chicks.  Most of the lady's are doing all they can to look athletic, healthy, cool grandma, or biker babe....it is somewhat age dependent, of course.  There are a lot of younger women riders today that are strikingly independent types.  They all try to recover from terminal biker helmet hair.  Nearly every BMW rider wears a helmet whether the local law requires it or not. The old saying in bikerdom is, "A five buck helmet for a five buck head."

What I saw was that there is still a lot of interest in and wearing of jewelry going on in this diverse crowd.  Anytime I spoke with someone and mentioned what I do, they had lots of interest.  It seems everyone has questions about the subject of jewelry and diamonds.  While there are great changes happening to the way jewelry is shopped for, there seems to be no loss of interest in the subject.  Everyone wants to know how to be a better shopper today, so what we are doing here, on Pricescope, sure makes sense.

By the way, I had a wonderful ride although I did miss having my computer on most of the time.  There were some signs of keyboard withdrawal on occasion, but I managed to do without it for a few days.

Thank you for the info, David!

It sounds like a wonderful trip.  I'm with you on the shower and air conditioning.  I love the great outdoors...AND the great indoors.

Didn't your motels have internet access?  Although I know it's not the same.

It seems nearly every motel has good Internet connections now, but my wife insisted I take a break and have a few days off.  She made me leave my laptop at home......

Everytime we rode the Harley to a Harley rally I still wore my diamonds and sapphires.  I was also amazed at the number of women that didn't go all "biker chic"  Some of the older generation did but as far my generation they were all wearing Gucci and the like while cruising down the highway on the back of a HOG.

I also agree..while camping can be ok sometimes I still opt for a nice hotel room..ahhh, gotta love those jacuzzi tubs, heat lamps and AC

The bike rallies we went to were all in Myrtle Beach, SC and there are no helmet laws..but I'd rather have a helmet and deal with helmet hair than no head at all.

I'm glad you had a wonderful time and made it back safely.  Did you take any pictures?
