I have a platinum solitare ring set with a .31 diamond. I'd like to buy a bigger loose diamond (between .80 ct - .99 ct.). Is this possible by changing the prongs? Is is a common?

The entire head (all prongs and there base) can be changed.

It is done all the time. If your mounting is worn and the shank (back of the ring) is getting thin you may just consider a new moutning before you have to repair it too.
