I thought this was interesting because we're always talking about cost of living and quality of life on this board. http://money.cnn.com/best/bplive/cities_table/ Our city is ranked #1 in the Western Region (under 100,00 population), no wonder we pay an arm and a leg to live here in RSM, CA. Oops, it should have been 100 most DESIRABLE PLACES to live..... No wonder I pay an arm and a leg....I don't know where they get the median home prices from....it doesn't buy much where I live, maybe a 2 bedroom condo. |

We live in Bernards Mountain (thoughwe have no post office). I I noticed that cities which have higher crime rates, lower home values and higher student to teacher ratios and worse polution rated hgihgter? How is that? Is it becuase those town are more affordable?

Hmmm, well I'm in the central region and I actually have a few friends in Naperville, the number 1 city. That one I understand, it is a really nice town; great shopping, eating, entertainment, people, etc. But I'm surprised that Bartlett made the list in the under 100,000 category. Also have some buddies there, not impressed with the town at all, for the most part it looks very low-income and falling apart. Maybe I missed a part of it!!!

I live in the number one region in the east over 100,000. We wish that those magazines would stop ranking us so far up there! Too many people coming in and crowding our schools and roads. Too many new subdivisions and shopping centers ruining our small town charm or what used to be small town charm. The local population has been exploding in the last 10 years.

Ummm I'm not sure where they got the median home values from either. I looked at a town near me, and the price they gave would but like a handful of dirt. Interesting to see though.

I compared the stats there to the ones from our town and hey I did go to school there, there student to teacher ratio was off, the only classes that had ten kids in the public schools were gym classes and lunch. I guess those count more then english and science. Ia slo dont know what they think they are going to buy for the money they listed....a mail box? The price per acre, nothing on it is more then 5 times that. It really makes you wonder how accurate these things are and if they are bothering to check their information prior to publishing. Of the five things I checked none of them matched...and some of those things are vauge, property crime includes kids papering the high school football feild and stealing a car.....it is just to open for my taste.

I live in Naperville and we love it out here. But again, where did they get that "median" house price? You'd be extremely hard pressed to find anything less than $200,000 here. I think the median is more like $400,000 and unfortunately our taxes are outrageous. Hey Irish -- I also question Bartlett. Who did this survey?

Ya know, I'm not sure about the way Money Magazine rated this, but about a year ago business week also did a rating based on school district, crime rate and number of recreational areas etc....I deem that to more accurate than this money magazine rating. RSM was also ranked top 10 in the NATION by Business Week. I honestly believe it's a super-safe city because we leave our front door unlocked almost daily, and we once went without a garage door for a month (while a new one was on order) and both my husband and I work full time.....not even a nail was missing from our garage. |

I used to live in Chicago and they are right about the Gold Coast having one of the most expensive zip codes. It's a neighborhood right next to downtown with a lot of chic restaurants and shopping. My former boss (an attorney) lived there.
