I will be on vacation the next couple of weeks and am leaving from Minneaopolis MN Tue AM, and driving west on I 90 through Rapid City. Ultimate destination Spokane WA for the weekend, then back. Anyone have any suggestions on "must see" jewelry stops on the way (or anything else of interest). Yes, I do know about Wink Jones in Boise Idaho (a bit out of the way - but possible). I will try to monitor the forum, past tuesday, but no guarantees on being able to post. Perry |

I dont know where i-90 goes through, but driving west are you going through South Dakota? Badlands, Black Hills, Mount Rushmore. I thought the Badlands were pretty cool! Have a fun trip!

Prairie Edge at 6th and Main in Rapid is a really cool store. It has a ton of Lakota wares. Some are incredibly well made, others are simply for tourists. But, they have a few glass cases of interesting silver jewelry. I don't remember for certain, but I suspect they also have some rose gold pieces as it is used in so frequently in Black Hills jewelry. My favorite part of the store is upstairs. There are hundreds (maybe thousands?) of jars of beads. People can either buy pre-strung hanks of beads or select from the jars. I have never seen so many colors, types and sizes of beads in my life! It was fun just to walk through and brainstorm ways to use them all. Rapid City in is a great place in general. There is a restaurant there called the Firehouse (or something) that has good, inexpensive food. If you eat meat, I strongly recommend getting a Buffalo burger. If you plan to swing by Rushmore, you MUST also make a detour to Crazy Horse. The project is AMAZING. All of Rushmore can fit in Crazy Horse's head! Sadly, the project is not likely to be completed in our lifetime - but for a reason I can understand. The original work was all done by one man. He trained his children (I believe he had 10 or so.) in working the rock. The project management, and much of the technical work is still done by his children. They have declined government offers of financial support, because they are concerned with reliquishing control of the project. They fear that the Crazy Horse complex would be at risk for abandonment or a drastic change in mission. If you plan to pass through the Pine Ridge Res, feel free to PM me. I can give you a few more ideas on memorable places to stop by. Munchkin
