My girlfriend and I are going to Paris in early July and I am looking for ideas.  It is a trip we are taking because she is in the travel business so I don't think she will expect what is coming.  I have already taken her parents to dinner and they have given me the go ahead.

I am not familiar with Paris, so I am not sure how to handle this.  I am thinking that simple is best so nothing can go wrong.  We are already going to be in one of the most romantic places on earth, but I want to be thoughtfull in the proposal and not just drop to one knee because of where we are in Paris.

A couple places I have are Proposing:
1. On the middle of a beautifull bridge.
2. On the Eiffel Tower.
3. Or in a Restraunt with a view of the city.

I really want to incorporate the city(View) into the situation and have some ideas of places, but don't know of extra things I can do to go the extra mile.

Any ideas would be great!!!!

there is a beautiful park right outside the eiffel tower which is beautiful at night...  the city is lit, and people are just lying on blankets in that little park - plenty of room for your own privacy.  maybe an evening picnic there...  and then possibly going up the eiffel tower to overlook the city?

paris just has a very romantic ambiance to it...  i don't think you could go wrong whatever you decide.

There are evening boat rides over the Seine River which could be very romantic...but there is also a bridge that runs across the Seine River which is probably a bit more private (from a scene in Something's Gotta Give, if you've seen that).  I believe there is also a park right before you get to the Champs Elysees (which is a great place for a evening walk).  But if you really want to find the perfect spot in Paris, I would suggest buying a Paris travel book and choosing your spot that way.

My boyfriend and I just got back from Paris about 2 months ago, and i thought it was pretty, but Rome (which we also visited) took my breath away.  I booked a 'river boat ride' on the Seine so we'd have a perfectly romantic trip down the river, but to my disappointment was the most 'touristy' thing we did -- the boat wasn't too comfortable, and they have a loud guide with a megaphone during the whole trip, which takes away the romance!  And we did it with the largest boat company, Le Bateau Bouche or something like that, whom our hotel recommended.  I would avoid the Seine at night, unless it is a walk.

Also, unfortunately with all the TomKat news recently, you probably don't want to propose on the Eiffel Tower or she'll have to endure endless comments like, "OH how romantic, just like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes!"  Like no one ever had the idea before them, but you know that's what people will say!!

My suggestion would be to take a day trip to Versailles, and do it in the Gardens of Versaille -- they are so vast and so gorgeous, you could find a little hideaway with privacy -- my boyfriend and i were there in early March and were crazy about the gardens!  It was snowing, we made a snowman in a little knook somewhere, no one around!  They told us it would take a full day to see all of the gardens, but we were on a timed trip with a bus tour so we didn't have all day.

Anyway, when i think of Paris and Romantic, I think the gardens of Versailles, so there's an option!  GOOD LUCK!!

First of all, a proposal in Paris sounds devine!  The Eiffel Tower sounds like it would be romantic, but there are lots of people up there.  If you don't care about doing it in a crowd then go for it.  All of the above suggestions from the other posters sound good to me.  Personally my favorite spot is the Sacre d'Coeur in Montmarte.  If it's not the highest point in the city, it is at least second or third on the list, and there a fantastic view from there.  I went there during the day, but I can imagine at night...wow.

Keep us posted!!!

I agree with Montmarte, Sacre Couer!  We went there on our last night around 9pm and it was still packed with people, absolutley stunning!  You could see for miles, the sky was so dark but the white of the church was so bright and lovely!!  Again you have crowd issues, if that's a concern, but you can't beat the view!!  great suggestion, i had forgotten about that!

Royalasschergirl:  Like minds.  You are right, it IS crowded at the Sacre d"Coeur.  But there is that area just outside the church, down the steps where there is space to carve out your own private spot.

I definitely agree Le Sacre Coeur in Montmartre sounds like it would be the best spot for you. The Basilica is on a hill called Montmartre, and from the grounds right in front of it you have an elevated view of the entire city. You can see the Eiffel Tower on the left, the Tour Montparnasse straight ahead. The place is really croweded because tourisrs visit the basilica, but after visiting hours (after 10pm I believe) there are less people, and you can find an intimate spot without problem if you wish to do so. I am from Paris (born and raised there), so trust me that it is the perfect spot that combines a view of the city and intimacy (because true that the Eiffel tower is crowded during the day and after hours you will only be at the bottom of it- no view of the city). I hope you go for that idea.
Congratulations!!!!!!!and good luck
PS: I have attached a picture of the basilica at night and a picture of the view I'm talking about during the day (so imagine it at night...lights everywhere, its gorgeous).

If you want to go outside of Paris. I recommend you to take a day tour to Monet's House and gardens in the city of Giverny. It's the perfect place to propose. You can book tours easily in Paris. You can check out this website http://giverny.org/gardens/fcm/visitgb.htm.  It was Monet's insperation place for some of his beautiful paintings.

If you want to stay in the city I would vote for Le Sacre Coeur in Montmartre. The view is spectacular and not to crowded at night. Easy access, not too far from the metro.

I wouldn't recommend the Eiffel Tower or the Seine River cruise to propose. It's way too cowded. But it is a must to visit.

What ever you choose. I'm sure it will be great. Congratulations.
