Hi there!
I got a rockin marquise stone and a cool dealer just waiting for me to line up an appraiser. I have never seen the stone. I am not having any luck locating a Los Angeles appraisor with all the bells and whistles discussed on this site that I would like to take advantage of so I will have to send it out.

I looked at a couple websites but don't exactly know what to order. I called one and their machines don't do fancies yet.

Anyhooo, I would like an appraiser to verify the diamond is indeed a diamond w/o any treatments, that it has no dangerous flaws that would damage its integrity and that it matches the cert. I also would like some sort of information regarding light return and cut quality. Lastly, I would order a monetary appraisal.

1. Anyone know anyone in Los Angeles that do this?
2. Am I ordering all I need to know?

These aren't usually very difficult questions.  Most appraisers are equiped and prepared to answer these questions quickly.

I also would like some sort of information regarding light return and cut quality.

This can get a little tricker and it will vary a little depending on what you want.  Ask the appraiser what they use and what they charge.  There are quite a few options ranging from Sarin and ray tracing approaches to brilliancescope and idealscope analyses.  The regulars here are all able to assist on this in one form or another but we tend to take different approaches.  This forum is the big pool and there is some first rate talent represented here.

1. Anyone know anyone in Los Angeles that do this?

There is a list of appraisers at the top of the page under the 'resources' tab.  Pick one, ring them up and ask them. If you can't find one that suits your fancy, there are several of us who are 'internet friendly' and cater to a national clientele.

2. Am I ordering all I need to know?

This depends on you.  Most new purchase clients also end up wanting an appraisal on the final ring that documents the remainder of the item as well as the center stone.  Many want a Gemprint.  Some want a BrillianceScopoe report.

Sorry for being lazy but do you have any threads on here that I could look at which you used to learn about what bells and whistles you should look for when finding an appraiser? Did you just do a search on appraisers?

Thanks!

Thankyou! It has indeed been a long road. I hope this is the one! I contacted Dr. Gary Dutton -who totally Rocks- today to send the stone to  Roc Doc so I could get another expert opinion. Last time I found a cool rock it magically disappeared soon after posting on pricescope but I don't think that can happen now as I reserved it.

Ya know buying online is spooky but I realized no jewerly store locally would have what I wanted. I used Atlas's wonderful fancy chart to choose my specs. I studied Gog, Pricescope and nice ice sites over and over. I asked  Pricescope members opinions which really helped and  Roc Doc and Gary of Dutton's Diamonds made it easy to close the deal.

BTW Gary searched his heart out to find me this beauty among over 250000 stones and provided me excellent service in providing me the information I needed to make a sound decision. He never pushed me, also examined the stone himself and provided his opinion rather than just drop ship it.

I am the pickiest consumer as I know exactly what I desire and cannot be sold anything. Some sales persons love this, others hate it. Gary got my tude and did not waste my time pushing stones that where not within my specs. I totally " say with valley girl accent" recommend him @   Duttonsdiamonds.com

My Rock "I hope":

Marquise "of course"
1.02     "huge to me"
E color   "I like snow"
VS1       "whoa that's extra"
VG polish   :) "shiny"
VG Symmetry- "cherry on top"-  haha I have done research on the importance of symmetry in human faces
Girdle-med-Slt thick
Table-56
Depth-62.1
Crown height=14%
Culet - Small "Not concerned"
No Fluoro
L/W=1.91

Now I need a totally kewl plat setting and matching band.
Thanks Pricescopers!

Dunno yet- I like plat with a tapered band toward the stone. Not knife edge. Maybe a pear on each side? Blue Nile has one I can't seem to upload it to show you. I like tacori too. Sometimes simplicity is best. I will know it when I see it.

What I do believe is a semi mount with some shape will be important to compliment the shape of the marquise.
