I have a question. My girlfriend basically picked out the setting at The Shane Co. and I purchased it but she does not know this. It is white gold. Anyways, I think I am going to purchase a diamond from Blue Nile. Do I just have The Shane Co. set it after I receive the diamond or another independent jeweler? When do I get it insured?

I did something similar to this. I had the company I bought the center stone from set it, not the jeweler I bought the setting from. This way I knew the integrity of the stone not being swapped would be reduced, if not eliminated. When I got the ring back, completed, the jeweler who set it showed me the plots on the GIA cert with the inclusions on the stone to ensure it was the same stone. Since he sold it to me, he was familiar with the stone's characteristics.

You can always ask, and the worst they can say is "no". If they agree, they will most likely also be willing to provide you with an appraisal. If they decline, call around to locals to see who will do it for you. |
