My girlfriend basically picked out the setting at The Shane Co. and I purchased it but she does not know this. It is white gold. Anyways, I think I am going to purchase a diamond from Blue Nile. Do I just have The Shane Co. set it after I receive the diamond or another independent jeweler? When do I get it insured?

I had the company I bought the center stone from set it, not the jeweler I bought the setting from. This way I knew the integrity of the stone not being swapped would be reduced, if not eliminated. When I got the ring back, completed, the jeweler who set it showed me the plots on the GIA cert with the inclusions on the stone to ensure it was the same stone. Since he sold it to me, he was familiar with the stone's characteristics.
