You can contact these independent appraisers in Boston who could recommend you somebody... Jeff Averbook: http://www.metrojewelryappraisers.com/ Martin D. Haske: www.gis.net/~adamas/about.html Pricescope |

Dorfman's on Newbury Street is supposed to be great, though you will pay for it - both financially and in the wait time. If you are looking for a mainstream setting like Tacori, Scott Kay, Verragio, etc. - Long's in Burlington, MA would be worthwhile checking out.

I can vouch for Dorfman Jewelers! They have made two rings for me, both in platinum, and both very elegant and beautiful. In both case I provided the stones. The workmanship is outstanding, it rivals or is better than Tiffany's (I know because I have a Lucida). IMO the cost is well deserving of benchwork. Don't be intimidated by the store and security at the door, they are very nice people to work with. Good luck and have fun!

Yes, good point on the security. If you thought you have a rather exclusive experience at Shreve's - this is the next level! I was told by them they send out their work, not sure to whom though.

Oh that reminds me...stay away from Shreve Crump and Low! The benchwork is absolutely terrible, almost like it came off an automated assembly line. I know an elderly gentleman still in the industry that worked there some 40 years ago. He said that Shreve's has gone downhill since it's prosperous beginnings, and the stuff they are selling now should not even go out the door because of poor workmanship. You would be much better off at Dorfman's for custom handmade fine jewelry.
