How dark can one go in color and still look white in a white or platium setting. I am looking at J-M stones, and does cut affect this. It's hard to tell when looking a loose stones.

In the FAQs there is a thread called "J color stones in platinum?" where you can see the many white-looking diamonds of the I-J-K variety. That might help you.

It's hard to tell when looking a loose stones. I definetely think that cut affects the appearance of color in a stone. I have a J color ideal cut diamond that looks very white, but I have seen less well cut stones of G, H, and I color that look a bit yellower than my J. A good cut will enhance the light return and improve the fire and sparkle of your stone, and to me the color isn't as much of an issue if your ring has a lot of flash and life to it.. And personally, I like the tinge of warmth that stones in the H-K range of stones. To me those stones look like a flickering candle flame. But that is a personal preference of mine, others prefer the whiter more icy looking stones. Platinum and white gold can also bring out the color in a diamond more than yellow gold does. Many jewelers will have ring holders in both white and yellow gold that you can put the diamond in and see which one the stone looks best in to you. That might be something you'd want to try when looking at loose stones.
