Well I bought my girlfriends engagement ring through the family jeweler and I figured I'd post specs here and see what y'all think.

I got her a:

round brilliant
1.06 ct
VS2
H color
very good polish
very good symetry
60.8% depth
57% table
faint flourescence
$6200 for the diamond

I checked these out on blue nile and they were going for about $5800 so an extra $300 for "family jeweler fee" seemed reasonable.

The jeweler showed me the rapport sheet and everything seemed reasonable.... its being set right now.

The first round of diamonds the jeweler showed me were out of spec... the fire and brilliance just werent there. But when I told him what I wanted, the quality went up a notch.

Thanks for any comments.

Thanks Alj, Thanks Jimbo!
Well, the "in store" price for the diamonds at DoW came close to what I paid in the links you sent me Jimbo and I figure that thats probably the jewelers comission? If thats the case, then it looks like I'm right on. I was tempted to go the web route. But I always worried about not seeing the diamond before I buy... Have alot of people here bought their diamonds on the web? If so, how was your experience?

Thanks!
Ralph

Ralph, You can also buy the Diamonds you see on that website by just paying the DoW Price, that's what we did, got a very nice diamond. That in-store price is when Diamonds on Web sends it to one of their Jewelers and you inspect it with them with no money down. They way we did it, we paid the full price and then had the stone sent straight to us and then we took  it to a  few Jewelers to inspect it. All said it was a very nice diamond, I  had them guess what we paid for it and couldn't believe how cheap we got it for.

You will find alot people on this site buy their diamonds at all different online companies. Just make sure all have a good rep and the ones you deal with have a money back Guarantee if you don't like the diamond.

We are extremely happy with our purchase over the web, we went to a few restyleing events and local Jewelry Stores but the prices of their diamonds were out of this world......After I showed them the prices I found over the web they said I would be a fool to purchase one from them. They even advised me to get one on the web and then take it back to them and they would set it. I did buy a setting from them though so not really sure all Jewelers will do that.

Ring turned out like this

I have an H color RB so I'm biased. Congratulations on your very major purchase!

It's nice to have a family jeweler, I'm sure.

Well, I picked up the ring yesterday and am really really happy with it. I never knew something could be so alive. She picked out the setting and that only compliments the whole piece. It's a flower setting with 6 smaller diamonds, three running vertically around the main diamond on either side.

I sat outside and looked at it for an hour in the sunlight. I got blind spots, like the kind you get from staring at the sun for too long! It's amazing... portable finger laser canon!

It does really well in the sun and with unfrosted bulbs, ok in frosted incandesent lighting, and not good with florescent lighting. Do any diamonds ever do well in flourescent lighting? Additionally, it has alot of white light brilliance, but I would say a moderate amount of colored fire. Thats fine for me though. I know she will be happy with it.

Next time I will have to ask for a sarin report and plug in the numbers but for now I'm really really happy. I can see heart patterns on the inside so I think it's cut very well. The only exception is that when I hold it in the sun, I see a small rainbow pattern leaking down and out of one of the side facets. But only one. The top projects innumerable little white and rainbow circles. Do the circle projections come from the setting or the round brilliant patter?

Its a really clear diamond. The GIA report only show three tiny clouds in a corner... thats it! And I love the color...

All in all happy happy. Worth what I paid for in satisfaction. I wish I had a more knowledgable jewler though, but the relationship we have is important too since he makes sure to treat us well and get us as good prices as his brick and mortar operation can afford.

Now... i have no idea how to propose!

Thanks,
Ralph
