I'm hoping you guys will be able to help me out. We are looking to spend around $4000.00 on my ering. I know this might not seem like much, but we're a firefighter and a teacher- and I'm alright with this. We're starting to shop around, and the prices I am seeing are completely scattered. I really like either a marquis or a pear shaped stone- I'm not a big fan of solitaires, so I'm looking for more of a set. I'm looking around .70 carat for the center stone. We looked at Jared- and when I found out they were IGI cert., I was told by many to stay away! Now we're looking at private jewelers, and everything seems so expensive. I'm the sort of person that will not change my ring- the sentimental value means too much to me. Do any of you have any advice or experiences to share with me? I know I must sound like a complete idiot- but there is just so much to learn! If anyone is in the Chicago area and can give me a reference, I'd appreciate it!!!

Hi, Sounds like you're off to a good start. I think the most important decision for you right now is to determine which shape you'd prefer. By doing so, you won't feel as overwhelmed by all the comparisons you're making. Like you, I'm a sentimental person and still wear the same set that I picked out when I was in my early 20s . My advice to you is take your time. Learn as much as you can about the CUT of the shape you're interested and spend time looking at many stones until you find one that looks most beautiful to you. A private jeweler is a great idea. Also, there's many internet vendors who offer competitive pricing. Both marquise and pear shapes can display a bow tie, so be sure to look for stone that does not have such a characteristic. Good luck!

Here's a picture. . . also, I found a description on a web site: The bow tie effect, observed with the naked eye, is frequently found in marquise, oval, pear and some heart-shaped diamonds, and is considered to be a negative factor if prominent. It arises from the variations in the pavilion facet angles required in cutting stones which are longer than they are wide. The bow tie looks like two dark triangular shapes joined at the point in the center of the stone and looks like a man's black bow tie. While almost every elongated stone has some "bow tie" shadowing, your goal is to find a diamond where this is minimal, absent and not a distraction. This is something that specifications do not reveal, only personal inspection. I'm not very familiar with either pear or marquise cuts, but it seems like it can be a bit more challenging to find a well-cut stone among these two. It's definetly worth striving to find the best you can. . . Ask as many questions as you want. . .Hopefully someone with one of these shapes of stones can chime in ![]() ![]()

Hi Angelina. Welcome to Pricescope! I'm pretty new here myself (though for a 10th anniv upgrade purchase). The first thing I did was read thru the FAQs and tutorials. The tutorials are mainly for buying a round diamond, but there is plenty of info that applies to any diamond purchase. Once you know what to look for, go back to Jared and other stores and look at different stones in person. My experience at Jared was that my questions were too hard for any of the sales staff (all thanks to PS)! I had no intentions of buying there, but it was a good exercise. I found that the diamonds (except for the branded "Hearts on Fire" they carry) were very inferior cuts and yes, graded by IGI. Yet all the staff were "Certified Diamontologists" (what is that?!)... When you visit the B&M stores, compare diamonds of different cut grades and color grades and learn about inclusions, too (niceice.com has a great tutorial on their site with very clear photos and descriptions). Learn what you like. Then start searching for your diamond. I plan to buy my next stone from an online vendor for quality and pricing reasons.

The bowtie can occur in the middle of a pear, marquise or even a cushion cut. It looks just like a man's bowtie. I put together a three stone cushion ring with a lovely sapphire in the center and two cushions for the sidestones. It took me a long time to find great cushions without the bowtie. Hope this helps!!

Adding that there have been a few Chicago-area diamond merchants recommended lately. Search for "Chicago" under Rocky Talky and you should get some recs.

Make sure you search the part of the tutorial re: fancy stones.....it gives recommendation s for length:width ratios, etc....fancies can have quite a bit of cut variation....On the Show me the ring page, there are threads re: pears,etc....do a search on the top of the page to come up with some threads to read......After you have more info, ask more questions, and peolple will be happy to help you!!!!

Thanks so much. I'm pretty proficient with the cut/color/clarity info... Its when we get to the widths/depths, etc... that I am lost! I care more about a good color/clarity than the size of my diamond. Do you think $4000.00 is a decent amount for what I'm interested in?
