Hi from a mostly lurker

First off let me say that I have been reading these forums for several months now, preparing myself for the big step.  I want to give everyone a big thank you :)  You guys offer invaluable information for someone like me who's never owned a diamond to this date. (perhaps too much info as my boyfriend would like to say, but he's not anal retentive like I am)

My boyfriend and I are finally at the point where we're ready to take the plunge!  We have a setting picked out, and now need to shop for a diamond.  YAY!.  However, there is a catch.  He  has given me the reins on selecting the diamond, but prefers we buy something locally, verus online or out of town.  I guess its a personal comfort level thing and he wants someone local that he can go to if things need to be fixed.

We have found a local jeweler who is not the "maul" store type of place, whom we believe to be trustworthy.  However they do not offer ideascope images or sarin reports on the stones they sell.  My boyfriend feels I am being way too nic-picky on "numbers" and measurements, with me asking a zillion questions.  To quote him, "why are you looking at things that are measured in microns when you can just SEE if it is a pretty diamond or not?"

To be honest, I would feel more comfortable buying locally IF they can provide the data that tells me this diamond is an ideal cut diamond.  I am at a loss of what to do here.  A few of the diamonds they've shown us so far has a GIA cert, with no crown and pavillion angles available.  I suggested we drive out to Whiteflash (we're in Austin) to look at some ACA's, but my boyfriend has asked me to make that plan B, if our jeweler locally cannot deliver.

What do you guys think?  If the diamond looks pretty to the eyes, does it really matter what its idealscope image looks like or if the angles are within the HCA ideal range?   Should I just trust my eyes?

I need some advice from you seasoned diamond shoppers :)
Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I'm with you and vote, no (frankly, other discussion here on repeatability help to explain why).  But, if you're bound and determined, for $25, this is designed to help (and then forget the photos, and do it yourself).

Find out where your nearest Hearts on Fire dealer is. You're bound to have one. Go there and look at HoF stones, but make sure you hold them under a table, outside of the store lighting, cupped in your hand, outside in sunlight if possible. Also ask if you can compare a HoF stone with one of their non-ideals. THEN, armed with that picture in your head, go back to your local jeweler and see if they can produce a stone that approximates the flashiness of the HoF stones you saw.

And yeah, an IdealScope helps too.
