Hi PS, I just upgraded my fiance's 1k into a 2.34 D SI1 from MDX which I collected from Michael in New York. The stone is beautiful and I am just wondering whether any PS can refer me to a RELIABLE/HONEST jeweller/appraiser in the San Francisco area that can set the new diamond in the old setting for me. Thanks in advance for everyone's help..

Hi - I would recommend Zwillinger & Co. They are located at 760 Market St (the Phelan Bldg), Suite 800 (I think) on the 8th floor. Its very well marked and easy to find, but not a big expensive retail space and so they have more reasonable prices. Try to deal with Barbara if possible - she is a graduate gemologist/geologist, very knowledgeable, and will take the time to explain anything that isn't comfortable for you. She used to do appraisals for a living so she is very experienced in that area as well. We (FI and I) got my e-ring diamond and had my ring set and appraised there and were very pleased. If you go, tell them Jamie and Rebecca sent you. One small heads up re: setting your new stone in your old setting is that with such a large size difference, some major adjustments may be needed to the setting. Perhaps some of the experts on here can chime in, but I think that might be a bigger job than just a regular setting job, which might be more expensive and/or complex. Again, I'm not an expert, but this is something that an experienced jeweler should be able to help with.

Is it a solitaire setting, or is it more ornate? If it is a simple solitiare, they can likely just switch out the current head with a bigger head (you will have to pay for the new head). If it is a more complex setting, you'll definitely need a jeweler's opinion about whether your current setting can accomodate the bigger stone.

It is just a simple solitare on a classic tiffany setting.

Also just wondering what the expert think of this. My fiance want a setting that make the stone look bigger.. We have the tiffany classic solitare setting but she is thinking of having a new setting with sidestone or something on the side.. (to make it bigger).. But I think the solitare setting focus the attention on the diamond and it won't detract from it. I know most people will say that it is up to individual's preference.. but I am just wondering what is the general consensus out there.
